Protesters and officials, including Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, have repeatedly called for a Milwaukee police officer charged with homicide to be fired.
But Officer Michael Mattioli, charged with a felony for killing Joel Acevedo, has remained on the city payroll in the four months since Acevedo's death. Acevedo died after Mattioli put him in a chokehold during a fight at the off-duty officer's house.
At a Milwaukee Press Club event Tuesday, Morales doubled down on the assertion that he lost the ability to fire Mattioli when the Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission, the civilian oversight board, forced the Police Department to stop its internal investigation and took over the probe....
See, there a State LAW that says Morales must complete the investigation and then, only for "just cause", can he fire the cop.
But under its ethically-challenged lawyer-chairman (appointed and backed by the increasingly-doddering Mayor), the FPC has screwed up the whole process. Doddering Tommy Barrett knows that, of course, but he really, really, really, wants to get rid of Morales. So he bleats out his virtue-signals and goes back into his hole.
(Apparently Barrett thinks Joe Biden's campaign style is a very good one.)
So the FPC pretends to be righteous, the Mayor pretends to be virtuous, and Morales--he doesn't pretend at all. He's just a very damn good cop waiting for a huge settlement. And he'll get one.
