One Wisconsin Now (OWN) reminds us that Mayor "Corvair*" Johnson would lose in an IQ contest against a chipmunk.
The Mayor held a presser to 'splain what the City will do about the shootings and vehicular violence plaguing a Downtown "entertainment district."
Two young women were run over by a car which went through traffic barricades and struck them. (They were horribly damaged and one remains in the hospital a week+ after the incident.)
Asked why he has not reached out to the women or their families, the Mayor displayed his typical ability to think on his feet:
...Johnson is the mayor. Surely, he has the ability to find a way to contact the parents of the two young women who were injured by a motorist who drove through a barricade downtown?
Instead, he twice asked a reporter, during the news conference, to get him the number of the parents....
IOW, Johnson has more important things to do, see?
Next, Johnson displayed his remarkable grasp of the law:
...Johnson denied that the incident was a reckless driving crash. “This seems to have been an actual accident,” he said, citing as evidence that the driver “stopped her vehicle,” rendered aid, and called 911, not fleeing the scene. “That’s an accident.”...
Seriously?
Actually, it gets worse; a witness stated that the driver began to leave the scene, but was prevented from doing so by that very witness. So--if the driver HAD left, would that make it a "Reckless Driving--Grave Bodily Injury" ticket? You should ask Lawyer Corvair* Johnson!!
More serious are the drive-by and gang-related shootings on or near the "entertainment district." But none--zero--zip--nada of the Mayor's "solutions" will prevent those, nor will any curfew-enforcement citations, nor restrictions on food-trucks, nor "increased police presence." Sorry, but that's a fact. When you have feral types running around with home-fashioned full-auto pistols who are avenging "dissing," closing a food truck early is ............not ............a remedy.
These events are what keeps people away from Water Street, Mr. Mayor.
It's too bad that McBride opened her piece with a (justifiable) screed about the police contract issue, which is very serious--and which presents a near-existential problem for the City, which is already taxing heavily and which cannot finance both Corvair's* silly social goals AND a long-overdue raise for the cops. One suspects that the cops' morale may be low but that they are not shirking duty due to the pay sitch. Instead, they are not issuing tix or filing charges because no perp is punished in the Kangaroo-Kourtds of Milwaukee. Why bother?
But that's for another day.
*Corvair: unsafe at any speed.
