Many people have portable generators--the ones you really need when the power goes out. They'll power your sump pump and your refrigerator plus a few lights and maybe a space heater or cooling fan. They are also used for camping out.
Fuggedaboutit, pal. Die in the dark courtesy of Biden and Trumka, his ultra-Lefty CPSC jackwad. A union man, no less.
To make this happen, they lie even more than usual.
...The CPSC deliberately catastrophizes in this "analysis" and does so in a deliberately deceptive and fraudulent way. They claim lives lost to CO poisoning over 30 years of time while deliberately changing the rules so that portable generators will lose half of their average service life. How? The current average service life is 10 years but a CO sensor has a service life of five years, and there is no requirement in this "regulation" that at a reasonable, field-replaceable cost (e.g. $10 or $20 by the owner) a sensor be able to be replaced or repaired when it reaches end of life. Worse, the standard requires the engine be unable to be started when that end-of-life occurs, meaning you will be forced to buy another one. The CPSC claims this "regulation" will result in only a small amount of additional cost which is a deliberate lie because cutting the service life in half means the actual cost of the device over that period of time, 10 years, doubles since you now need to buy two. In addition all of the disposal cost and environmental damage from building and disposing of them doubles too.
None of that is included in their analysis because if you did the regulation would fail on the required economic analysis component. So they lied -- intentionally -- and intend to shove this down your throat....
This regulation is imposed on us because some people ran those gen-sets inside their closed garage or with the exhaust pipe facing an open door to their home; some of those died as a result. Not to put too fine a point on it, but those deaths are examples of Darwin's Law.
It's up to you to agitate your Congress-slime on this matter, and even then you're not likely to get it rescinded.
What else can you do? Ignore the bastards and defend your gen-set with deadly force if necessary.
