No AM Radio in Ford? No Surprise

Ford Motor has announced that AM radio will no longer be available in its consumer offerings beginning in the '24 model year.

That should not be a surprise.

You WILL purchase the Ford entertainment system which supports streaming apps.

And if they're like GM, they'll find a way to collect monthly fees (SaaS model) for that streaming, too.  Just a matter of time.

Got Vaseline?

This is due to highly electrified drivetrains.

High power electronics often produce RF interference.

AM radio is highly susceptible to this interference both because of the RF frequency in question and because AM modulation is less tolerant of interference in general.

True in the case of Tesla.

Not yet true in the case of FoMoCo. Not even close. If it WERE true, FoMoCo would be pulling AM out of its commercial-truck and -car offerings, finding a way to exculpt AM radio from its contracts with those buyers.

It is cheaper to build a vehicle if they don't have to incorporate rf suppression. If they were just after the entertainment dollars they would eliminate radio altogether. This is also a safety issue as the low power traffic stations are AM.
