It's Silly Season for Wisconsin tax reform, so the "Flat Tax" is being flogged as the solution to all our problems and the rocket-power for astronomical economic growth. Maybe it is, maybe it ain't, but that's not the point here.
A couple of decades back, the "Flat Tax" was on the Federal radar. At the time, a far better plan, the "Fair Tax" was also floated. Neither of them succeeded.
What makes the "Fair Tax" the superior plan?
Families--that is, if you think "families" are important for any State's or country's growth over the decades. Some people obviously do not, Nepot LaMahieu being one.
Under a "Fair tax" scheme, there is a 'flat' tax rate. But there is a credit--including a 'refundble' credit for each child in the family--which incentivizes family formation. Not that long ago, "family formation" was considered a big plus for a healthy society. Now? Now we import illegal labor to make up for the lack of children.
That's the Libertarian Way, ya'know.
(And of all people who know this, Pat McIlheran of the Badger Institute ought to be one.)
