Daimler Trucks North America (Freightliner, Western Star, Detroit Diesel, ThomasBuilt school bus) will be using three kinds of engine tech in the future: diesel (medium-duty trucks), fuel cell (hydrogen), and battery-electric.
Daimler is developing its fuel-cell engine in partnership with Volvo. Toyota is looking at the fuel-cell for its passenger cars. Between these players, that's a lot of momentum behind hydrogen.
Daimler is also dropping natural-gas/propane from its lineup. ThomasBuilt buses currently use propane (and diesel, and gasoline), but apparently that's going to change.
Another interesting note: Daimler is discussing diesel engines with Cummins. That's interesting because Daimler owns the Detroit Diesel brand. Is Daimler going to chuck Detroit Diesel?
Hmmmmm!
