SUNLAND PARK, New Mexico - Standing in the shadow of the fence separating the United States and Mexico, Bishop Mark J. Seitz pulled out the photos of two migrant children, Jakelin Caal, 7, and Felipe Gomez Alonzo, 8, two migrant children who died in U.S. custody.
“We can’t allow more tragedies like these. They cannot be repeated,” the bishop of El Paso, Texas said Feb. 26 at the Interfaith Service for Justice and Mercy at the Border, celebrated by faith communities on both sides of the border.
The Bishop fails to note that the children died at least partially due to the criminal negligence of the parents who dragged them on the notoriously dangerous journey across Mexico and US deserts. He also fails to clearly describe the cause of the deaths. Surprised?
Finally, His Excellency obviously has failed to offer the illegal migrants a room at his residence, or in any of the churches and schools he oversees in El Paso. Instead of constructing false moral lessons, the Bishop could put his money where his mouth is, so to speak. I'm sure that the Faithful of El Paso would be very happy with that, no?
