Think of it this way:
TRUTH must necessarily be stranger than fiction; for fiction is the creation of the human mind and therefore congenial to it.
Works better, no?

My life is definitely stranger than fiction. I have thought of writing it down but who would believe it. Chesterton must know what he is talking about.
