iPhone Calls Home

Limbaugh mentioned that the iPhone has an 'always-on' location system which retains the phone's locations (lat/long) and then dumps them to your computer when the devices are synched.

At the time it came up, (Drudge also carried the story), the Official Line was that 'nobody used the data' and that 'nobody, but nobody,' could import the data from individual phones.

...iPhone and Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android smartphones transmit location data from the handsets back to the companies, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing documents seen by the newspaper.

Apple “intermittently” collects information about iPhone users’ whereabouts, transmitting the data back to itself every 12 hours, the Journal reported, citing a letter it said the company sent to U.S. lawmakers last year.

Google’s Android phones send location data to the company several times an hour as well as information about local Wi-Fi networks and a code identifying the particular handset, according to the report.

The first question: why did Apple 'send a letter to US lawmakers last year' about this feature?

The next question: who else can obtain and utilize the information?

Good news: if your phone is stolen, it can be found. If you're in an accident and disabled, you can be found. If you let your kid use the phone, he/she can be found (or tracked.)

Bad news: Other folks, some not your friends, can find you, too.

It is never smart to begin by impugning the ethics of an investigator.

Accountability board director Kevin Kennedy said in a statement Thursday that the agency would wrap the work it had already done into its investigation of the complaint filed by Kloppenburg.

"With respect to the public statements about our impartiality, it is the statutory responsibility of this agency to conduct these investigations. We are authorized to employ outside investigators, but they work under our direction," Kennedy said in a statement.

Board spokesman Reid Magney said it would be up to the board to decide whether to hire an outside investigator.

Rumsfeld's "Known and Unknown"

Rumsfeld's book is an interesting read; it tells one a great deal about Rumsfeld (not necessarily what he wants you to know) and even more about the Iraq/Afghan wars--much of which has been discussed, but not with the clarity he brings to the tale.

In the first several chapters, Rumsfeld does not quite claim that he instituted the seven sacraments. (Get the idea?) He's a fellow who is .....ahhhh.....very sure of himself and his instincts. It's not very hard to believe those who say that he's a 'micro-manager.'

For me, the most revealing narrative surrounded the 'bringing democracy' question. Rumsfeld makes it excruciatingly clear that the lust over 'democracy' in the Middle East came largely from Powell's State Department and was also pushed by Condi Rice. Rumsfeld also makes it clear that Bremer, the "czar" of Iraq, had an extraordinarily high opinion of his place in the world--and the Administration.

Rummy also makes it clear that the Administration's problem with communication was not limited to GWB's famous inability to speak English.

Worth reading; but be careful. Others who have encountered Rummy have warned that he's very happy to be self-serving--an opinion which is not dispelled by reading the book.

City of Milwaukee: Spend More Money! That's a Law!!

New legislation signed by Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett earlier this week will require convenience stores in the city to have at least two high-definition surveillance cameras. The legislation, passed by the Common Council earlier this month, was requested by the Milwaukee Police Department and was intended to provide more reliable video evidence for criminal prosecutions

After all, it's up to the victims to build a solid case against the criminals, right??

Stores will also be required to store the video on recordable CDs or DVDs, thereby disqualifying the old videotape systems still used by some stores.

None of that old stuff in the City of Milwaukee!! Only the newest, best, and most expensive. And you must have it, too!!

A Contrarian View on Ryan's Budget

This is about the proposed budget which Ryan's House committee issued a couple of weeks ago, and it compares against Obama's budget proposal.

On the deficit, Ryan does OK (as does Obama) for a few years; starting in 2014, however, Obama's deficit numbers go up, while Ryan's remain about constant (!)

Obama wants to spend more on D of Defense than Ryan (!)

The Ryan budget proposal, unfortunately, simply gives up on the National Debt. By 2021, Obama's national debt will be $26.3Tn; Ryan's would be $23.1Tn.

This is "a difference"?

Maybe Ryan should muzzle the Old Bullshit Republicans on the Budget Committee and start all over again.

City of Brookfield Would LOVE New Tax Revenues

The headline on the linked story is not quite accurate.

The city of Brookfield is "willing to annex the territory within the towns" of Brookfield and Waukesha that is currently subject to an incorporation effort, according to a resolution the Common Council unanimously approved Tuesday.

"....willing to annex the territory..." actually means "happy to increase our tax revenue-base because Brookfield Square is going all dinosaur and the 94/18 interchange area has lots of development possibilties like VonMaur, and wow, gee, taxrevtaxrevtax....."

Wait. They're not done. They just stopped to wipe the drool from their chins.

"Then we can put in our stupid sidewalks and justify the overstaffing we have in City Hall, just like the City of Milwaukee and the City of Wauwatosa, and .....wow....gee........more tax revenues, wow.....taxrevtaxtaxtaxrevrevtax....oooooooohh"

Obama's Utterly Clueless European Adventure

Those brigades will be complemented by new forward deployments of Aegis ships and special operations aircraft, a permanent aviation detachment in Poland, and land-based missile defence systems in Poland and Romania. In the end, with the winding-down of the mission in Afghanistan, there will likely be more US forces in Europe in 2015 than there have been for the past decade.

(This despite his order that the Pentagon reduce another $400Bn from its spending over the next 10 years.)

Apparently Obozo wants our armed forces everywhere. It fits right in with his long-term strategy of destroying the US' position as the world's leading democracy.
