President Obama did what he had to do in relieving Gen. Stanley McChrystal of command yesterday. But despite the appointment of Gen. David H. Petraeus to succeed McChrystal, Obama did nothing to clarify the strategy or make victory more likely in Afghanistan.
(A reminder: I think that the War Party persuaded GWB to enter a fool's mission. "Nation-building" is not the business of the Department of Defense. Finding and killing Bin Ladin, in contrast, is a perfectly valid mission.)
Having said that, Babbin's essay is dead on.
Obama himself is entirely vague. In his announcement of McChrystal's relief, he said, "We have a clear goal. We are going to break the Taliban's momentum. We are going to build Afghan capacity. We are going to relentlessly apply pressure on Al Qaeda and its leadership, strengthening the ability of both Afghanistan and Pakistan to do the same."
...The goals Obama set for Afghanistan -- like the jobs "created or saved" by the Obama "stimulus" last year -- are meaningless. They are political, and not susceptible of objective measurement.
Meaningless goals are dangerous to US troops. Let's be clear: McChrystal and Petraeus BOTH acceded to Obama's demands that 'no civilians' will be killed. That engendered Rules of Engagement which are almost suicidal.
While Mike Yon is an optimist about the Petraeus appointment, I'm not, and neither is Babbin, who has lots of cred.

Lawmakers adopted the plan a year ago as part of the state budget, but it needed $807,600 in funding for the next year to be approved by the Legislature's Joint Finance Committee.
The committee Wednesday voted 12-4 to do that, with Republicans voting against it in part because the plan could cost local police agencies as much as $10 million for new equipment.

In November, the Health Department eliminated the job of network administrator John Tranetzki, 63, and reassigned his duties to a younger worker, the state agency said in its ruling. Tranetzki had previously been disciplined for performance issues.
City officials contended they cut the job to save money. But at a budget hearing five weeks before Tranetzki's dismissal, Baker told a Common Council committee that he wished he could replace Tranetzki with 10 15-year-olds, the ruling noted.
That "15-year-old" utterance is just as moronic as the 'too many old white men' remark from a State of Wisconsin manager.But there is one similarity: taxpayers will pay for those remarks. How many $millions is yet to be determined.

Over the past 12 months, metro Milwaukee lost 14,800 jobs, far more than any of the 12 metropolitan areas tracked by the agency, also after adjustments to smooth out fluctuations from the start of warm weather and school vacations.
Other parts of the state showed pockets of stagnation. Appleton's metro area lost 100 jobs in May from April and 1,000 since May 2009. The metro areas of Racine, La Crosse and Oshkosh-Neenah neither added nor lost jobs. The remaining seven metro areas added jobs.

Furthermore, every time an organization runs a campaign ad, its CEO must appear in the ad and state twice his name and the organization’s name. The top five funders of the organization behind the ad – even if they had nothing to do with the ad’s funding – must also have their names listed in the ad.
In addition, the most “significant” donor to the organization must list his name, rank, and organization 3 times in the ad. Another Slip/Fall Lawyer Opportunity!
While delivering someone to their destination yesterday, I watched a man park his vehicle.
He carefully drove into the spot and got to the concrete car-stop.
His vehicle promptly accelerated, driving over the car-stop (and dislodging it), continuing on until the vehicle's front bumper hit the solid stone exterior wall of the building.
He proceeded to back up and park the vehicle.
It was NOT a Toyota. It was a Jeep.
Obviously, a "sticking accelerator" problem, right?

Chaos is more easily achieved through executive orders and regulations. BK could take a bit longer--but maybe not.
It is by now, for anyone who has followed the unfolding scandal, level ground that Obama's express model for his (continued) vow to centrally plan a "green economy" is bankrupting the country he hailed eight times for its vision, Spain. And Spain has acknowledged it.
Then there are the other elements of what he has in plan for you, as detailed in Power Grab: he is not anti-offshore drilling, he is anti-domestic energy production. Immediately upon entering office he sealed off millions of acres from domestic energy production in a breathtaking, well, power grab, even cancelling leases already entered.
A mere District Court opinion will not stay Obama and his stooges from their course; Salazar has promised another moratorium, this time with "scientific" evidence. And he'll be able to get that, of course. SOMEONE out there needs a grant or a Federal favor, and he'll find them.
Obama's green policies will steal your freedom and bankrupt America. Ask the poor folks in the Gulf suffering under his crisis-capitalization, after speaking to the folks who have had leases pulled out from under them in Utah, and elsewhere feeling his War on the West. Those are places where he's just getting started.

The Bin Ladin chase was a good idea. "Civilizing" Afghanistan? Stupid and un-doable--but damn profitable for the War Party.
The War Party got its way and handed off the problem to Obama, an indecisive Socialist/Statist ideologue with an attitude. Because Obama is incapable of command and leadership, the misbegotten Afghanistan mission is in trouble.
But it's not only Obama.
...it’s a little late to be complaining about how dense the administration officials are, regardless of how true that view is. Recall that this conversation took place.

Recall that a similar project in VietNam took around 4-5 years--and that project had a WILLING and ABLE South Vietnamese military. In Afghanistan, those elements: 'willing' and 'able', are conspicuous by their total absence.
In other words, McChrystal took on an assignment which he knew (or should have known) was impossible to accomplish; he then implemented Obama's tactical requirements (ROEs which are suicidal), and now he deliberately yelps. One has to question McChrystal's bona fides.
The only sensible objective in Afghanistan is to seek and destroy Bin Laden. "Civilizing" that country, or up-training its military, is a fool's venture and, frankly, none of our damn business.

The president was crisp but informal. “Bob, you have any problems?” he asked Gates, who said he was fine with it.
The president then encapsulated the new policy: in quickly, out quickly, focus on Al Qaeda, and build the Afghan Army. “I’m not asking you to change what you believe, but if you don’t agree with me that we can execute this, say so now,” he said. No one said anything.
“Tell me now,” Obama repeated.
“Fully support, sir,” Mullen said.
“Ditto,” Petraeus said.

Obama Is Widely Despised in Military

...In a phone interview, he said the state should provide suggested qualifications for educators, but actual hiring decisions should be left up to local school boards, superintendents and principals.
"Certification" is tantamount to restraint-of-trade, but with lipstick.
By the way, "actual hiring decisions" should include "and firing." No reason that a principal cannot get rid of deadwood or bozos--"certified" or not.

In 2005 the L.A. archdiocese dismissed a Vatican directive barring homosexual men from the priesthood. That Vatican directive was widely interpreted as a direct response to the sex-abuse crisis, and was backed up by a study commissioned by the U.S. bishops' conference that found that 80-90% of clerical sex abuse was perpetrated against adolescent males (ephebophilia), not prepubescent boys (pedophilia).
Regardless, the Vatican directive barring homosexuals from Ordination still stands.Mahony? Still standing, but not for long.
