Distortions--Catholic-Style

The local parish bulletin states that there's some discussion about the age at which children should be Confirmed. That's true.

The bulletin also stated that '...Confirmation administered during the teen years became popular during the 1960's....'

That's false.

During the 1950's, Confirmation was administered to 6th-graders. Later, the Archbishop TOLD parish priests that Confirmation would be delayed until at least 2nd-year of High School. I don't recall what year that policy was implemented.

It did not "become popular...[to Confirm teenagers]" It was a mandate. Nobody, but nobody, asked the parents THEIR opinion.

It should be noted, however, that some parents of my acquaintance voted on the matter--with their feet. They simply had their children Confirmed at an appropriate age OUTSIDE of the Archdiocese, while this place was being run into the ground by Rembert Weakland, OSB.
