US/Iran: a New Paradigm?

We really want this to be true, but suspect that it's optimistic.

... What Trump has actually accomplished is to reframe the Islamic Republic as a legitimate actor in world affairs, rather than a Forever Enemy whose very existence America can scarcely tolerate. “We got along very well with Iran,” Trump said on Monday in a joint press conference with France’s President Emmanuel Macron. “I find them to be more rational, very smart,” Trump told NBC News last week. Would any American president before Trump have been caught describing the Islamic Republic in this way?...

.... If the U.S. can’t topple the Iranian regime, and if the health of the global economy depends on Washington and Tehran getting along, then Trump can no longer follow the lead of uber-hawks who reject, in principle, U.S.–Iran diplomacy....

Umnnhhhh......maybe.

The author here, one Mr. Day, forgets that Iran remains an Islamic country, and Islam is flat-out incompatible with Christianity, the nominal basis of Western civilization.  The Muslims also despise Jews.

So while Iran and the West may get along on economic terms, there will always remain an underlying dissonance.  That dissonance shows at the edges of those tectonic plates--specifically at the Israeli borders.  So we can expect plenty more trouble as it is clear that Israel does not share Trump's view of Iran.

Tucker does a most excellent interview with Trita Parsi

We need to get rid of our 20 bases in the Middle East

Tucker is right. We have a sick relationship with Israel and we need to end it and let them deal with their neighbors

Besides, we can’t afford Israel anymore.

Until Israel signs off on the deal, and the deal is indeed officially signed by the U.S. and Iran, there is no deal.

"The author here, one Mr. Day, forgets that Iran remains an Islamic country,"

OK.

"and Islam is flat-out incompatible with Christianity"

Says who"

"the nominal basis of Western civilization"

That old term?

"The Muslims also despise Jews."

Over generalization. Anyways, so why would Israel then agree to accept the terms of the deal, i.e. removing its military from Lebanon?

"That dissonance shows at the edges of those tectonic plates--specifically at the Israeli borders. So we can expect plenty more trouble as it is clear that Israel does not share Trump's view of Iran."

So if that be the case, then the "deal" is just window dressing.

"Says Who?"

Are you THAT ignorant of Christian and Muslim theology, or are you merely being an obnoxious 5th grader again?

You apparently know more about the deal than almost anyone save Trump. Why don't you print it in the combox for us?

Moron.

To the contrary, the daily lived realities of devout Christians and Muslims are guided by nearly identical ethical compasses. The moral expectations of a believer in both traditions are highly compatible. The Quran does not categorize Christians as pagans or idolaters. Instead, it designates them as Ahl al-Kitab (People of the Book). This is a term of distinct theological respect acknowledging that Christians received genuine divine revelation via the Injeel (Gospel)..

So to claim absolute incompatibility is to confuse difference with contradiction. Christianity and Islam disagree on key theological doctrines—most notably the divinity and crucifixion of Jesus. However, two faiths that share the same God, honor the same prophets, revere the same Messiah, and command the same ethical treatment of humanity cannot be called "flat-out incompatible." They are, instead, deeply intertwined theological cousins.

"You apparently know more about the deal than almost anyone save Trump. Why don't you print it in the combox for us?"

It's on media sites and social media sites. Israel refuses to leave Lebanon. That is a crucial part of the "deal" between the U.S. and Iran.

Not really "the same God." The Christian God is a Trinity; the Muslim God is not. That is why Belloc called Mohammedanism one of the seven "great heresies," and that is why they are totally incompatible, as one can see through the radical difference in treatment of people.

That's easy to see. While Muslims "respect" Christians, they also demand money-obeisance "Jizra" from them; IOW, Christians are second-class citizens, just like Jews. Yes, the Orthodox Jews also treat Christians as second-class; Christianity is the ONLY major Western religion which does not allow that practice.

The "deal" (or so it is reported) popped up only this morning and frankly, I'm not going to read it. It's a problem--if any--for Israel and the other E. Med. states to solve, nor ours.
