It seems that the Wisconsin Department of Transportation wants to make it illegal to drive 'gray market' cars on Wisconsin roads. While I think that DOT's power-madness should never be questioned, (see, e.g., 'We'll ram this choochoo up your ass!!' from Frankie the Fixer), I don't have a dog in this particular fight.

Much more interesting is this line:

The deadline to stop WisDOT’s proposed Trans 123 is Oct. 10. Unless the Legislature kills the regulation by then, it becomes law. (I could also write a piece how regulation-becoming-law is backward and anti-democratic, but that is also a subject for another time.)

What This Country Really Needs: More Abortions!!

Some things you can count on. One of them is that, given a chance, a Democrat will push more abortions.

U.S. Sen. Roland Burris (D-Blagoville) has introduced an amendment to the defense authorization bill that would upend a long-time ban on abortions at overseas U.S. military hospitals. Soldiers would have to foot the bill for the abortions, but the procedures would be provided at taxpayer-funded facilities.

No small irony that Burris' amendment will kill off more blacks than whites, if history is followed.

GMAC/Ally Halts Foreclosures in Wisconsin

GMAC/Ally Mortgage halted foreclosures in Wisconsin and 22 other States today.

GMAC Mortgage may “need to take corrective action in connection with some foreclosures” in the affected states, according to a two-page memo dated Sept. 17 marked “urgent.” Ally Financial spokesman James Olecki confirmed the contents of the memo. Brokers were told to immediately stop evictions, cash- for-key transactions and lockouts, according to the document, addressed to GMAC preferred agents.

Seems that GMAC may not actually have legal grounds to take possession. A lawyer problem.

Bill McCollum, AG of Florida, is investigating three lawfirms used to process the foreclosure actions.

Meantime, McCollum, Crist, and the Treasurer of Florida are going to be investigated (if not tarred, feathered, and hung from the highest nearby tree) for approving Florida's purchase of high-yield "investment" securities from (among others) Citi. Seems that the State's investment board did NOT have legal authority to purchase such "investments."

Florida lost its ass on the paper.

Woooopsie! ObamaCare Blows Off Child Health Insurance

Well, you can't really love ObamaCare until you see what it does, right?

Thousands of Colorado children will soon have fewer options for health insurance. And parents who may not be able to afford it for themselves, but want it for their children won't have that option.

Ironically the change is as a result of the health care reform act.

...Child-only policies are typically obtained by families because sometimes it's cheaper than a family health plan through an employer. But most often parents who cannot afford health insurance for themselves purchase a child-only policy to make sure their kids are insured even if they are not.

But ObamaCare requires that insurers who have child-only policies take ALL children--meaning those with pre-existing conditions, too.

...until there is a mandate that all kids have insurance, like there will be in 2014, there is an incentive for parents now to only sign-up their child when he or she is sick. Zirkelbach said if parents only sign up sick children, premiums for other policy holders will have to be increased

The NBER has finally announced the most worthless and overdue piece of data, namely that somehow, miraculously, the US recession that started in December of 2007 ended in June of 2009.

ZeroHedge is a bit skeptical.

We have yet to hear when the distinguished Ph.D.-bearing shamans of Keynesianism at the NBER will convene to decide when the Depression that started in December of 2007 will end.

There is a LOT riding on the answer to that question. The (R) Boyzzz know damn well that IF they take Congress and the appearance of recession doesn't dissipate in 12-14 months, they are dead meat, along with whoever they nominate for the President's race of '12.

The Feingold slime machine wants to show us that Ron Johnson is a "hypocrite." To do that, they point out that Johnson inquired about the possibility of Porkulus funds to fix the roof of an Oshkosh landmark while Johnson served on the restoration effort's Board--or some such association.

Be serious, Feinie-Slime.

Anyone who has EVER served on a non-profit Board will tell you that if you have to find large money, you automatically check for Gummint programs which may help. It's a given. It's part of the drill, just like meeting with local money-sources (such as Johnson, who ponied up more than a few bucks for the project from his own pocket.) Gummint moneys are not necessarily the best moneys, but $11 million is a lot of bucks for Oshkosh.

So the Feinie-Slimers are now hitting on Johnson for suggesting that the renovation bunch do its DUE DILIGENCE?

Unlike US Senators, private-sector people cannot simply Order the Creation of Money and Debt to finance worthwhile civic projects. So they have to explore all the options available.

But I guess Feinie/Slimeys don't get that 'private sector' stuff, eh?

Another Lawsuit Over Open Carry

Another municipality is about to forfeit a bunch of money.

A Wisconsin group that promotes "open carry" of firearms says it will take action against Madison police after two of its members were issued citations for obstruction Saturday night when they refused to identify themselves at a restaurant.

...Eight officers came to the restaurant and demanded identification from the five men, Gold said, adding that when two of them refused, they were handcuffed, disarmed and searched for identification, then given municipal citations for obstruction and released.

The argument is about the demand for ID, which was questionable.

I'm not part of the "open carry" movement. However, it is constitutional.

There is a comparison, of course; if the Madistan cop-shop were to demand ID from, say, peaceful sit-down demonstrators at an openly racist restaurant, would there be any question of the legality of such a demand?

The Mandates Are Coming to Your Home

Clear, concise, and to the point. If you like poison lightbulbs, you'll LOVE what these folks have in store for you.

Assistant Energy Secretary Cathy Zoi said Thursday that the U.S. Department of Energy has a “mandate” to issue regulations to determine what household appliances are available to Americans in the future.

"[ ]...the secretary and I love,” said Zoi, “is where we have a mandate. Where we can actually just issue regulations and do market transformation.”

Here's the line that's deceptive:

“We’ve already issued appliance standards that are going to save the American public somewhere between $250 billion and $300 billion over the next 20 years, just by getting the crummy stuff off the market.”

It is reasonable to be a skeptic about her numbers. There are always significant trade-offs when designing "higher-efficiency" appliances (or automobiles). One of those trade-offs emerged with the "energy efficient" lightbulbs--which happen to contain mercury, a highly toxic substance.

Other considerations include the use of more exotic metals--which cost more--or more exotic manufacturing methods, which ALSO cost more. Reliability might be affected.

But what does this bunch care? Or KNOW about the trade-offs?

Remember, too, that this bunch will be subject to a BigBusiness lobbying effort which will have the effect of promoting Big Business interests.

YOUR interests? Not so much.

Obama the Potted Plant

Sadly, this appears to be correct. (I say 'sadly' because he IS the President.)

Obama's most basic problem is that he has never been a thinker. He has not invested the years of hard work that are needed to develop coherent policy positions. Superficiality has always been good enough to get by for Obama, and now, when his policies are in tatters, he has neither a philosophical foundation nor a deep knowledge of the issues to fall back on. He is left staring into the headlights like a doomed deer.

And it comports with the "anonymous insider's" testimony reported last week.

1) Three Brookfield East high school seniors were arrested before the East/Central football game for assault and battery on a Brookfield Central freshman. They will be charged as adults.

UPDATE: The local paper reports that FOUR arrests were made at halftime, students were East freshmen.

2) St John Vianney parish was defrauded of $121K by a "very sophisticated" ring of thieves operating through the automated clearinghouse (banking electronics) system. Most of the money has been recovered with the assistance of the Secret Service, and the balance (less $1K deductible) will be reimbursed by insurance. Neither the parish' nor the bank's employees are implicated in the theft.

Scott Walker, This Is Not the Right Answer

Walker, responding to a proptax question:

As I have shown by introducing eight consecutive budgets without a property tax increase from the previous year, we can control property taxes. We should restore the QEO (qualified economic offer) to allow school districts to control costs. We should allow local governments to enroll their employees in the state health plan, saving up to $300 million which can be used to reduce property taxes. Most importantly, I support a strong property tax freeze.

Nope.

The QEO and a "proptax freeze" are State-imposed mandates on LOCAL governments. In other words, Scott, you think that the State is far more wise than the local elected officials.

I doubt it, and there's plenty of evidence to back up my doubts. (I have my doubts about some locals, too--but that's OK. Let them cook in their own juices.)

Part of the proper solution is to eliminate the requirement that arbitrators consider "comparable" school-district salaries, and let school boards actually be responsible for compensation agreements. Another useful change would be to repeal the State law which mandates full-disability benefits for firefighters who have pulmonary problems.

We don't want to trade one Statist for another, Scott.
