There is a parallel to the UW-Madistan/Cronon/Pubbie situation.
That parallel is a bit more dramatic.
A prof at UCLA was canned for blowing the whistle on fraudulent 'global warming' research affecting California's clean-diesel fuel law.
So Glenn Reynolds mentioned something which is germane:
A cynic might suggest, of course, that notions of academic freedom were developed in the first half of the 20th century largely in order to protect communists from being fired, and that since Enstrom isn’t a communist, academic freedom shouldn’t apply . . .--Reynolds quoted at McCain
The more they squawked about 'academic freedom,' the faster we counted our spoons.... (adapted from R. W. Emerson.)
