Woulda/Coulda/Shoulda in Boston

That's John Paul II telling (Fr.) E. Cardinal to right himself with the Church before attempting to kiss the ring of the Pope.
What was broadcast was a political circus, and Sean Cardinal O'Malley blew it.

Ya think we might have a few bishops who could stand to hear that lecture, eh?

OT--when my kid was little --

Q. Why can't priests get married?

A. It's against the rules.

Q. Can the pope get married.

A. Well, ah, technically, yes.

Q. Why?

A. Because he can change the rules.

:)

That line of reasoning is a 'power-line' reasoning which, as you know, is inappropriate.

If priest-celibacy were changed, then ALL priests including the Pope, could get married.

(If they were that......dense.)

And, of course, the Easterns have maintained a vestige of the original discipline; no Orthodox BISHOP (or above) may be married, either before or after consecration as a Bishop.

Imagine that. A deluge of married men entering the Catholic Church to spread the faith, but why have that when POTENTIALLY other problems could arise, right?
