Another idea from Obama.
Students beware: The summer vacation you just enjoyed could be sharply curtailed if President Barack Obama gets his way. Obama says American kids spend too little time in school, putting them at a disadvantage with other students around the globe
..."Our school calendar is based upon the agrarian economy and not too many of our kids are working the fields today," Education Secretary Arne Duncan said in a recent interview with The Associated Press.
--quoted in Riehl World View.
Frankly, more on-task time is not a bad idea for the darlings; the Great Summer Forget makes the first month back a review, rather than a continuation.
The opposition to this will come from the teachers.

NEA will never let that happen.
Baloney, the teachers union is all for this. Are you kidding me, a few extra days a school year or minutes in a school day will increase teacher pay significantly. This is a bone being thrown to the teacher's union. Do you think we are going to work for free for the extra time?
Why would a teacher get more in ANNUAL compensation if they were required to work for more of the YEAR for which they are already paid ANNUALLY?
(I know you're right. We all know that the teachers are horribly underpaid, can't afford catfood, yadayada.)
Actually, we could get better performance by keeping 3 months/year vacation, but schedule school 3 months on, 1 off, 3 on, one off, 3 on, one off.
Dad, do you seriously expect the NEA, WEAC, CCEA and other teacher unions are just going to sit there and let the school districts mandate more time without without compensation? Surely you jest.
That is the union view, not my view.
As far as 3 on and 1 off, maybe, but not in Vegas. We have some schools that over crowded and already occuppied 12 months a year.
Like it or not Dad, teachers are all in for this plan.
They are compensated for thier months off now, and they know they will make even more in year-round skroolin.
Plus, this push comes with no requirement to expand of standards. Teachers will now be paid more to teach more hours while accomplishing the same thing.
That's how it works.
