"Vatican" Call for "World Bank"? Not Really

Fr Phil has the goods.

Suffice it to say that the headlines aren't exactly accurate.

But the Church does NOT like unfettered utilitarian capitalism.  That shouldn't be a surprise to anyone--nor should it bother any genuine Conservative.

Much more from Fr.Z's place--and the essay closes with a very pertinent observation:

...many of its authors’ ideas reflect an uncritical assimilation of the views of many of the very same individuals and institutions that helped generate the world’s most serious economic crisis since the Great Depression

Indeed.

Well it is from the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace after all…

Phil Lawler had a good piece on it also at Catholic World News. He points out that the Church should stick to what it knows, concluding: ” If you want to promote Catholic social teaching, don’t wander beyond your expertise. Stick to moral principles, and leave economic analysis to the economists.”

Wandering into economic theory dilutes the message of the Church and already we have seen the headlines which ignore the moral teaching and scream that: “The Pope wants a Global Bank…”

Perhaps Vatican Dicasteries, national episcopal conferences and assorted diocesan chanceries could learn a lesson from Our Lord – as in: “Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and unto God what is God’s.”

Just a thought.

"Wandering into economic theory dilutes the message of the Church..."

But dictating to a government as to what policies it ought to implement only strengthens the message of the Church. Got it!

Indeed, the Church should stick to what it
knows...religion, not politics.
