Glendon to ND: Thanks but No Thanks

Mary Ann Glendon was to recieve the Laetare Medal from Notre Dame at this spring's graduation.

"A commencement, however, is supposed to be a joyous day for the graduates and their families. It is not the right place, nor is a brief acceptance speech the right vehicle, for engagement with the very serious problems raised by Notre Dame’s decision—in disregard of the settled position of the U.S. bishops—to honor a prominent and uncompromising opponent of the Church’s position on issues involving fundamental principles of justice

"...It is with great sadness, therefore, that I have concluded that I cannot accept the Laetare Medal or participate in the May 17 graduation ceremony"

Ms. Glendon turned down the gloria mundi. There are more important things, after all.

Yes! This is what I was hoping for and I expected no less of Mary Ann Glendon. Great example from a true Catholic!

She has class, & smarts. She refuses to let ND use her as a cover. Her pre-emptive release of her letter to the public shows she knew that ND might spin it in a way that would downplay the real reasons.

ND is now in a position where they have no cover. No true Pro-lfer will accept the award. & anyone less that 100% like Kmiec or Casey will just up the scandal.

Fr. Jenkins better start planning his retirement. ND's Board of Trustees is also going to have to do some rethinking, since they have a lot more blame on their hands than they have been willing to admit.

The government will take over ND and replace Jesus with Obama.
