St. John Paul II and "No Public Mass" Orders

Gee.  Here in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, the order has gone out:  NO PUBLIC MASSES.

That's (partially) because the Kommissar of Madistan has--legally or not--banned 'gatherings' of more than 10 people and has required 'social distance' at any gatherings at all.

So Abp. Listecki and all his brother Wisconsin Bishops caved.

What would St John Paul II do??

'.........Abp. Wojtyla himself would publicly celebrate Mass in an open field every single Christmas until the authorities finally gave up.....'

Those celebrations of the Mass were DIRECTLY IN VIOLATION of the Communist regime's orders.*

Compare.  Contrast.

The essay linked above does not point to a specific Canon telling Bishops that they may NOT cancel publicly-celebrated Masses.  However, since there IS a law of the Church mandating attendance at Sunday Mass, the legal presumption is that priests MUST offer a publicly-celebrated Mass.  The author also mentions the nuances.

*That particular Communist regime was in Poland.  You may draw your own conclusions about the Gau/Evers/Palm regime.
