Fifty Years!

This is a pleasant surprise.

At the time of her launch, this was Big News--a nuke pushing a ship.

The pictures at the link are humorous....

And all this time I thought the Enterprise was powered by dilithium chrystals.

Enterprise was the "second" nuclear powered warship. I was fortunate to serve on the First and Finest - USS Nautilus.

Neat-o!!

Means you coulda worked at WE's nuke plants if you wanted to; they love ex-Navy nukers up there.

Worked at a number of them as a consultant for many years. Unfortunately, the politics of nuclear caught up with many of us and we found ourselves on the outside. No new plants, no jobs. There are jobs now because the guys from my days are now retiring.

A very close friend of mine (now deceased) got caught in those politics, too. Wound up at Hanford.

Once again, there's debate about whether the speed of light is an absolute, not to be exceeded....in the past, such debates ended with discovery of an error in measurement. Either way, Einstein got it close enough for practical use, and the Navy has made it safe and reliable.
