Gasoline-powered lawnmowers that are a big cause of summertime air pollution will have to be dramatically cleaner under rules issued Thursday by the Environmental Protection Agency.
The long-awaited regulation requires a 35 percent reduction in emissions from new lawn and garden equipment beginning in 2011. Big emission reductions are also required for speedboats and other recreational watercraft, beginning in 2010.
...The reductions on lawn mower emissions will probably be accomplished by adding catalytic converters that reduce pollution from exhaust but add cost.

Which is why I'll be getting a push-mower, thankyouverymuch. Better for the grass, good exercise, too.
My lawnmower is coal-fired, and has been for the last 6 years. Coal-fired electric, to be exact, with a 100' long cord which makes lawn mowing an interesting exercise in trigonometric strategy.
The political party that promises to ban the mowing of lawns instead will be swept by a grateful nation into a veto-proof majority.
Ah, gots to love the new religion of environmentalism ;)
...and the same people who think this is great! progress! will immediately try to have me ticketed by the city when I rip out the bluegrass and replace it with indigenous flowering ground cover so I never have to mow again. Environmentalism is awesome unless they have to look at it.
