IBM: "We'll Make You Ex-Pats"

This story tells you something.

Redefining the possibilities of the word "offshore," IBM has invited its recently laid-off U.S. workers to find work with the storied company in developing countries like India – where salaries are a fraction of what Americans are used to.

...An internal document circulating the company says that a program called "Project Match" will "help you locate potential job opportunities in growth markets where your skills are in demand," according to InformationWeek.

"Should you accept a position in one of these countries, IBM offers financial assistance to offset moving costs, provides immigration support, such as visa assistance, and other support to help ease the transition of an international move," the document says

One could also move to PRChina, South Africa, and the Czech Republic.

Interesting! Back in the run-up to Y2K we needed to get all our mainframe software 'Y2K-compatible'. Having IBM mainframes we looked to Big Blue to provide the support needed for this.

A team of IBM-ers worked onsite for about a year on this task. All of them, without exception, came from either India or Pakistan. I know this because I dealt with their Timesheets and could never tell which name was the first name and which was the surname...!

What goes around...

Knowing Big Blue, I expect that you paid an average of $200/hour/person for that team--and Big Blue paid them around $85.00/hour, INCLUDING housing, health/dental, mileage, etc.
