G K Chesterton (The Everlasting Man) reminds us that Carthage, like its forebears, Tyre and Sidon, worshipped Moloch, and ritually sacrificed its babies. It was a very wealthy state, indeed, and wished to eliminate Rome, which was a competitor. It damn near succeeded; Rome's situation was desperate after Hannibal crossed the Alps.
Rome was a pagan state at the time of the Punic wars, but Moloch was not one of Rome's gods; in fact, Roman gods were 'family-first' kinda critters--the diametric opposite of those of Carthage.
And we all know who won that war in the end. Scipio's counter-offensive was extraordinarily successful, not only recapturing northern Italy, but the coast of France, Spain, and northern Africa. In the end, Cartago delendam--it was not only defeated, but the city disappeared.

No. As Regular Guy says, if you want your values to live into the future, there's no substitute for fertility.
Oh, my, we just discussed this chapter in Roman history last week in our homeschool. The kids thought it hilarious that Cato ended every speech, no matter the topic, with "Cartago Delenda Est!" But it worked.
We need our own Cato these days. "Abortion Delenda Est!"
