There has been a good deal of debate in the Catholic social media space over the recent prominence of exorcists, who are priests assigned to driving out devils from sinners. The debate centers around whether those men should be seen so much in videos, tweets, stories, and interviews.
We think they SHOULD.
Why?
Easy. They call attention to Lucifer and his very large army of devils. For the last 50++ years, practicing Catholics--the small portion of baptized Catholics who actually go to Mass weekly or more often--have heard very little about personal sin from the pulpits. There's lots of chatter about 'social evils' and 'charitable obligations,' and the once-a-year 'abortion is sin' talk, usually near the anniversary of Roe v Wade. That's it. Needless to say, the "un-churched", along with a large number of mainline Protestants, Muslims, and Hindus, don't hear much about Satan and his ways, either. Doesn't hurt at all for them to learn a bit about all this!
Other sins--such as gluttony, envy, fornication, homosexual activity, and prominently, the use of artificial contraception, are stuffed into a closet and rarely, if ever, heard about.
Exorcists bring all that to the fore, along with describing the pathways through which 'the legion' enter the souls and minds of sinners.
Perhaps exorcists would not need to be so famous if every priest in every parish read a chapter of CS Lewis' Screwtape Letters to the congregation on Sundays instead of preaching about the latest "social-evil" fad. But until that happens, exposing the Devil and all his pomps and works is a good thing.
