HH Francis, we are told, has decreed that the death penalty is no longer acceptable in Catholic doctrine.
There's a reason for that, and I think it has NOTHING to do with the DP's liceity. It is the McCarrick/Honduras/Chilean homosexual-predator-priests-and-Bishops scandal, which has ignited an explosive reaction in the USA and in Central and South America.
The Honduras/Chilean scandals involve large numbers of Bishops and a Cardinal or two who were in the Pope's ecclesiastical circles. The McCarrick scandal has the potential to cripple the US Church for at least the next 5 years. This is serious stuff and HH Francis is on the hot seat.
The Pope cannot change the Church's teaching on the DP.
But he sure as Hell can change the topic, no?
