Bishops' Charities to Cut Off ACORN

Well, they cut off funding ACORN.

But you have to read the story. It's an elliptical excuse.

Funding was suspended for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, popularly known as ACORN, because of the financial irregularities, said Ralph McCloud, executive director of CCHD, the U.S. bishops' domestic anti-poverty and social justice program.

"We're not funding them at any level," McCloud told Catholic News Service Oct. 15.

The suspension covers all 40 ACORN affiliates nationwide that had been approved for $1.13 million in grants for the funding cycle that started July 1, 2008.

The "irregularities" is the $1 million embezzlement.

Not to worry. Joe the Plumber will be paying plenty towards ACORN when his taxes go up.

Or is it really because they got caught & exposed by EWTN (The World Over)? If EWTN hadn't raised the questions, I don't think they would even be considering suspending the funding.

I find it interesting that they also use the word suspended. That implies that they could resume funding at some future point. They are just waiting for the heat to die down.

My other question is, how much of the $1.13 million has already been given to ACORN & will they make ACORN return the money they already got? (I suspect that they will keep this under wraps for as long as they can.)

Note that that they have only suspended funding. It can be restarted at any time.

CCHD must think we are idiots and not smart enough to realize this.

I say we continue to push for a boycott.

Since 1980, if I want to support a Catholic charity, I write a check DIRECTLY to that charity (one case in point was sending hurricane-relief money directly to a Diocese in Mississippi.)

As for the 'suspension,' my guess is that it will be permanent. The Bishops have FINALLY figured out that the Church actually has enemies more significant than Latin-lovers...

Dad29, I wish I shared your optimism. But, given the track record I think suspension means just that, a suspension that will 1 day be lefted, when they think no 1 is looking. Until the Bishops clean up the mare's nest that the USCCB bureaucracy is, the DC gang will continue to support their left-leaning buddies & undermine the teachings of the Church.
