No Crisis Here, # 10574

Actually, if Milk Carton were asked, he'd tell us that "the GUN did it."

Milwaukee police were investigating the shooting death of a 39-year-old man killed in his driveway Monday morning.

The man was found shot in a car in the 8100 block of W. Mill Road just after 10 a.m.
Police have not made any arrests and were not identifying the victim.

It is the 98th homicide this year compared with 115 at the same time last year.

See, it was a "shooting." That means that Evil Guns were out prowling, and found this guy...

For those keeping score at home, the area of grave crimes is expanding. The Silver Spring/76th Street area used to be a relatively decent area. I wouldn't go so far as to say affluent, but I think it was respectably lower middle class. I wouldn't say it is an area I would fear shopping at night, but it is an area in decline.

Dear Dad;

What would you call it?

It's criminal violence, jp. Otherwise known as murder.

Do you really think banning guns will stop it? We've made murder illegal - has been for millenia - but that doesn't stop thugs from killing people.

I could take a gun, place it in the middle of my living room, and it wouldn't kill a single person unless someone grabbed the gun, pointed it at another, and pulled the trigger.

A majority of people realize that murder is illegal and don't do it. States that have passed conceal-carry laws have seen a reduction in crime and MINIMAL instances of licensed gun carriers using the guns illegally.

And I agree with m.z.

The neighborhoods to the north and east of my own are getting worse. And it's a tragedy that thugs are able to ruin perfectly good neigbhorhoods because they don't know how to be effective, responsible, law-abiding citizens.

A bumper sticker I've got:
Guns cause crime like flies cause garbage.

Pretty much to the point if ya ask me. :)

Yah, JP, I'd call it murder. That's a crime which could also be committed with a knife, a rope, or a sword--not to mention a wide variety of items found in most toolboxes. A car will do, too.

Crime, by its nature, requires an ACTOR, not just an instrument. Instruments don't do crime.

Shoot!

Now I understand. It wasn’t a shooting, it was criminal violence (murder) committed with a gun.

Pickey,pickey.

Back when I was young, idiots would lose their temper, get drunk, get in arguments, just like these days. But when they did, they got into fistfights. Maybe threw a couple of barstools or their beer mug. They ended up with black and blue marks and cuts and scrapes and maybe a busted bone or two, but they lived. Nowadays folk think they have to wander around with guns, they still have arguments, drink, lose their temper, but now they start shooting and make people dead.

If we could only go back to the fistfight age.......
