The Axelrod visit with the Pope was a master-stroke for Axelrod, whose Communist Party affiliations (Mom, Dad, Grandpa) are a massive tell.
(Recall that the Communists despise the Church AND the US.)
Why a "master-stroke"?
Because not only did Axelrod 'persuade' the Pope to make a few careless statements about the US President, thereby diminishing that President's support and prestige.
But in addition, the Pope's careless statements also diminished the prestige of the Papal office, and the Church.
Damn, that was a good move.
