Not being a BB fan, I don't have much to say on the Kobe Bryant thing. Apparently he was a Catholic and attended Mass more than once-a-week; and apparently he confessed and was shriven for whatever happened with that hotel clerk.
He was also a really great BB player.
What struck me, however, was the near-continuous lamentation over his death. Every day, stories would appear quoting various other players, and miscellaneous friends and fans praising the guy. That's unusual because with most of these 'sports guy dies' stories, it's all over in a couple of days.
So what AOSHQ has this morning explains a lot of it. (Scroll down to the text message which tells the story of Kobe and a very young fan named Kobe (!!)). You'll probably have some dust in your eyes or something after you read it.
But here's the takeaway: NO PUBLICITY. That was his thing. What good he did, he did not letting the left hand know what the right was doing.
Now all those continuing lamentations make sense. Lots of people knew what a man he really was, but they didn't talk about it, at his own request.
