"US Catholic" Essay Drips With Condescension

About 30 years ago I picked up a copy of "US Catholic" while visiting a parish.  The parish was known as a somewhat 'liberal' place, and reading the magazine proved that beyond a doubt.

So when "US Catholic" ran an article about Catholic Trump voters, I knew what to expect.  But I did not expect such a juvenile, openly prejudiced, condescending, pile of tripe.

Yes, indeed, there are examples!!

The author is visiting Thomas More College in New Hampshire:

...I didn’t know yet if I was in Catholic heaven or Catholic hell. Or—as the daughter of a Lutheran mother and a lapsed Catholic father—if this was purgatory, where I’d hear the justification for an American Catholicism that had drifted far to the right...
Far to the right?  How about "remaining in place" while certain other Catholics have drifted far, far, far, to the left?

...Trump’s Catholic support (he beat Hillary Clinton 60 to 37 among white Catholics) was among the most important and unexplained statistics of the 2016 election....
Notice the setup for "raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaacis!!!" in there?  What was the overall Catholic support for Trump?  The one that includes ALL the races?  Hmmmmm??  Still on that question:

...Catholic support for Trump was unprecedented and complicated, despite the easy answer that it was about abortion....
Revulsion at the most corrupt (D) in history might have played a part, sweetie.  "Abortion" did not prevent the Catholic vote from going to Obozo in '12.

The author actually makes the case for the College:

...What Thomas More lacks in size it makes up for in influence and zeal. The college has just one major—liberal arts—but its goal is diametrically opposed to what most Americans would consider liberalism. At Thomas More young men and women aren’t allowed in one another’s dormitories. There’s no drinking, no organized sports, and no illicit drugs....
Those aren't "bugs," young lady.

She rattles on with the usual prejudicial narrative.....'affluent', 'white,' ....

I can sense the college’s admiration for a bygone age of education rooted in ancient Greece, where only the wealthy had the privilege of education for the sake of education.
...and inserts the obligatory "SIN LURKS SOMEWHERE"....

...the campus and its students’ and faculty’s scrubbed, self-consciously composed appearance make me wonder what lurks in the shadows....

Using soap regularly is an indicator of hidden evil?  OK, then!!

[Her student guide to the campus] Cassella uses antiquated words like virtues, formation, and spiritual practices.
The reporter-ette occupies the Brave NEW World, you see.  Not only NEW, but slightly schizoid:

...I am struck by how utopic this world seems, removed from the barriers of sexism, classism, racism, and homophobia that so often scar and divide American contemporary life. Maybe I wouldn’t have minded dwelling in this world a bit longer, and I probably would have been welcomed, since I am white, Christian, and heterosexual....
No doubt that she knows, with Biblical certainty, that there are zero homosexuals or lesbians on that campus.  She probably asked each student, right?  Because as we all "know," nobody can be a homosexual or lesbian AND a Catholic, right?  Especially a Catholic who uses antiquated terms such as "virtues, formation, and spiritual practices."

The reporter-ette uses all the usual deceptions and trickery, too.

...Cassella, like many American conservative Catholics, believes that the clergy sexual abuse crisis is partially attributable to a large number of gay priests entering the priesthood in the 1960s and ’70s, even though homosexual identity is not linked to sexual abuse....
........except for the EIGHTY PERCENT of the VICTIMS who were boys and homosexually attacked.

There's more, but fisking this crap is tiresome.  Bottom line?  Don't bother with "US Catholic."  It's not "Catholic" and may not even be "US"--aside from its address.

I wonder what she would think of Wyoming Catholic College, where you can have a rifle but not a cellphone...
