Met a friend (yes, I have ....at least one...) the other day for lunch. Decided that a handy spot would be Panos', the Greek-and-burgers joint on Bluemound Road.
My pal arrived a bit later than I did, which allowed me some time to look at the menu.

LUNCHES were priced at a minimum of $7.95 (one item)--with most of them being $8.95 and up--to the $15.00 area. You also paid for coffee, soda, triple-chocolate dessert, etc., PLUS tax, PLUS gratuity.
(In fairness, Panos uses large china plates and has good-sized tables and plenty of paved parking-lot. Also, it's air-conditioned. You get fries and soup with most of the lunch sandwiches.)
We ate cheap and left $26.00, more or less, on the table.
One advantage: you could pick from a lot of empty tables and booths.

I'm glad I am not the only one noticing...even the family restaurants are charging an arm and a leg.
As far as Chicago, my husband and I were just commenting on the sad state Racine would be in if not for Chicago people. There would have been no downtown Racine renaissance without them. All of those restaurants and new buildings around the harbor are thanks to Chicago people expecting something decent for entertainment when they dock their boats, God Bless 'em.
Incidentally on Saturday nights you can go to Spinnakers right on the lakefront with indoor/outdoor seating (on a large balcony), lake views everywhere, cloth tablecloths and napkins, nice decor and get (Saturdays only) a 1/2 pound burger, steak fries, and a beer for 5 bucks. Great deal! The whole family of five ate for $33 plus tip.
