If you haven't seen a Bongino show, you should. He does a nice job of conservative comment without going over the edge (Lin Wood, anyone?) and is a genial entertainer to boot.
Anyhow.
In the January 1 episode (yup, he was working), he told us all why Government--at any level--will never get smaller. A County official friend of his told him:
Dan, there is NO power in "Yes." (All the power is in "NO".)
Want to develop a patch of land into a subdivision? See the district alderman--and bring candy. They have power in "NO", but not in "Yes." You may have to 'help them understand' the virtue of your idea, no matter how good that idea is for the city, and moving them from "NO" to "Yes" might require candy.
Want to braid hair? NO, until you get a license. Bring candy. If it were "Yes" (no license required) then the city wouldn't get candy, would it?
Bar and grill? Hardware store? Third bathroom addition to your home? Car registration? Bring candy.
Think that "car registration" is a necessary thing? OK, let's say it is. Ever notice how the price NEVER stays the same--always goes up? Now that they have the power of "NO" you must bring candy--or more candy. Same goes for every other "permit" and "license." You HAVE to have it to survive, right? Well, then, bring candy.
By the way, that works going the other way, too. If enough free citizens act in concert, aldermen, mayors, and Governors go away. Stupid regulations get un-done. Bureaucrats get eliminated. Of course, the best way to do that is through the ballot box.
The other way is not desirable.
