An especially “woke” soul named Marty Beth Collins, director of the UW Center for Community and Nonprofit Studies, proposes that Trump syndrome sufferers bang pots and pans promptly at 8 p.m. every day until the bad orange man goes away.
The Barbarian hopes – and that is the mark of him -- that he can have his cake and eat it too. He will consume what civilization has slowly produced after generations of selection and effort, but he will not be at pains to replace such goods, nor indeed has he a comprehension of the virtue that has brought them into being. Discipline seems to him irrational, on which account he is ever marveling that civilization should have offended him with priests and soldiers… In a word, the Barbarian is discoverable everywhere in this, that he cannot make: that he can befog and destroy but that he cannot sustain; and of every Barbarian in the decline or peril of every civilization exactly that has been true. The masculine pronoun is used in the classical literary sense, albeit Belloc probably never imagined that the Barbarian might be a she-creature.

Trump keeps up his effort to turn the subject of the day to Baltimore. Not exactly.
Martin co-founded the Tea Party Patriots, the 501 (c) (4) non-profit group started that same year [2009] to promote the three core values of the movement: (1) Constitutionally Limited Government (Personal Freedom), (2) Free Markets (Economic Freedom), and (3) Fiscal Responsibility (Debt-Free Future). How nice. Nice of her to decide what the 'core values' are--and for her to take home seven+ hundred grand in salary for whatever she's doing here. Except........
...Of course, no one will bother disputing the facts of Trump’s tweets. That’s a dangerous subject that must never be mentioned. Any examination of Baltimore would not only reveal Trump is right, but also reveal those things we all know are true, but are told we must never mention. Baltimore is a black city and the highest crime areas are the blackest areas. For example, 92.9% of those arrested for murder are black and 91% of their victims are black. Crime in Baltimore is a black thing....

Lee, who was the front seat passenger, began firing at the SUV and accidentally shot Gibson in the head....

When the FIRST STEP act was making its way through Congress, its advocates claimed that only “non-violent” federal prisoners would be released from prison early. By non-violent felons they meant, in essence, drug dealers, as opposed to, say, murderers, rapists, and armed robbers....The law was written very badly--maybe Kim Kardashian or Jared Kushner drafted it? As a result, "good time" was credited to EVERY Fed prisoner, not just the "non-violent" ones.
...Contrary to what they promised, their law is letting violent offenders out of prison early....
One of the funny things about this age is how the political poles seem to be swapping positions on a great many issues. The Right, for example, is now more concerned with the plight of the working man than the Left, while the Left is a fanatical defender of global capitalism....Oh, yes, that's true.
...Conservatism, properly understood, was always skeptical of capitalism, because it tended to destroy indiscriminately. Bulldozing a church to build a processing center may be a more efficient use of resources, but conservatives always knew the altar was the keystone of civilization, not the factory....Even MORE true.
...Thinking of the American Left, at least the old Protestant aspects of it, as a theodicy, is a good way to understand why the people who used to sport Darwin fish on their Volvo are now extreme science deniers...Gay "marriage", along with Tranny Thought, come to mind. It's not different from the Truth-Denial of Jerry Nadler vis-a-vis Trump, although the premise is far less significant in Nadler's case.
...The left-wing science deniers are playing the antagonist role of the Church and the humans sciences are in the protagonist role. This is probably comforting to the empirically minded, as it suggests they will eventually triumph in the end. Not only is this a faulty reading of history, particularly the Church, it assumes that human progress is inevitable. That no matter what they do, the march of science will continue unabated....Anyone who claims that "human progress" has taken place only has to look at the murder rates around the world, or even in Chicago, Baltimore, and Atlanta. Yes, the US rates are 'better' than in Somalia, Congo, Iran, and Niger--but only if you exclude abortion.

"They're just really fun to ride, they're really affordable," he said.

...Domestic shipments of RVs to dealers have plummeted 22% in the first five months of this year, compared to the same period last year, after dropping 4% in 2018, according to the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association. It's all Trump's fault.
The RV industry's crisis shows how President Trump's trade war has backfired, hurting the industry he promised to protect.
Tariff-related price hikes have forced RV manufacturers to pass on costs to dealerships, which in turn the American consumer bears the brunt of the tariff, has slowed sales at dealers who are cutting orders and laying off workers....
..."The tariff price increases are what tipped the RV business — it started the landslide, no question," said Tom Bond, the materials and purchasing manager at Adnik Manufacturing, an Elkhart-based division of Norco Industries....OK, then. It's all Trump.
America magazine, the journal of the U.S. Jesuits, has just published an essay by its Toronto correspondent entitled "The Catholic Case for Communism."

...Bret Stephens of the New York Times: “So-called real Americans are screwing up America. Maybe they should leave, so that we can replace them with new and better ones: newcomers who are more appreciative of what the United States has to offer, more ambitious for themselves and their children, and more willing to sacrifice for the future. In other words, just the kind of people we used to be—when ‘we’ had just come off the boat.”Well, under the rubric that it is better to sacrifice ONE for the benefit of all, maybe American citizens should nudge that a bit, and sacrifice TWO for the benefit of all: Bret Stephens and Max Boot.
Columnist Max Boot narrowed the theme somewhat by suggesting only Republican lawmakers and grandees should be deported and replaced. “If only we could keep the hard-working Latin American newcomers and deport the contemptible Republican cowards—that would truly enhance America’s greatness,” Boot wrote. That’s harsh. At least Chris Hayes only wishes to destroy the Trump base with love and compassion in his heart....
In America, the nationalist claim is that the federal government has abdicated basic responsibilities and broken trust with large numbers of citizens:
• It has failed to secure the national borders and provide regular procedures for immigration and assimilation.
• It has delegated lawmaking to foreign and international bodies, and domestic bureaucracies, that have scant regard for the interests and values of many of our fellow citizens.
• It has acquiesced in, or actively promoted, the splintering of the nation into contending racial, religious and other groups and has favored some at the expense of others.
• It has neglected core American principles and traditions—separation of powers, due process, the presumption of innocence, local prerogative, freedom of association—allowing them to atrophy or be subjected to political conditions.--quoted at Grim's place
One is an ungrateful refugee from a war-torn African nation who consistently demeans the country that saved her and her family. Another is a foul-mouthed historical illiterate who called the president a “motherf—er” and vowed to impeach him the very night she was sworn in as a new congresswoman. Yet another is a camera-hungry drama queen who injects gender, race, and nationality into every political debate because she can’t win on the merits of her argument. And one represents a congressional seat once held by John F. Kennedy and, on the night of her primary victory, called the president a “racist, misogynistic, truly empathy-bankrupt man.”...Move aside, Chuckles and Nancy (and Joe, and Lizzie, and Cory, and Beetle, and Buttplug.....)
...As the squad tells it, white men are villains and captors, and white supremacists lurk in every corner of America. The plight of illegal immigrants is more important than the plight of working-class citizens in the Midwest. And the United States is a menace to the world. Earlier this week, Omar mocked the notion of “America the Great” and confessed she is “ashamed of . . . continuing to live in [America’s] hypocrisy.”...
...The GOP is hardly libertarian in foreign policy, as it has been hawkish about idiotic wars for the last two decades. It is hardly conservative in domestic politics, where it has accepted the sexual revolution, porn, and drug use as inevitable. If the red-highlighted text looks familiar, it should: that's basically Trump's platform. His election was not some sort of freakish Black Swan event at all, friends; in the primaries, it was a rejection of standard Republican/Libertarian/Corporatism/Adventurism. And in the general, it was a rejection of standard Democrat/Libertine/Welfare-ism/MonsterGov/Amorality.
The GOP has, in fact, perpetuated a mix of the worst of two worlds, when average American (and Western) citizens would prefer exactly the opposite: a bit more state authority in the technology sector and in drug enforcement, a bit more cultural chauvinism and pride in Western culture, a bit more balance in upholding societal norms, and a bit less interventionism abroad. With the Western left disintegrating, this is a perfect time for the GOP to take up those platforms, but that requires policy formulations, not polemics.
Ultimately, this appears to be a return to a more old-fashioned conservatism, one aimed at harnessing authority to maximize social good. The broad coalition between libertarians and conservatives might still exist on foreign policy, which is returning to its noninterventionist roots, but in domestic politics, the rift seems inevitable....
T...his new coalition does not want the federal government that small or to leave us alone. It wants government involved in fixing specific societal pathologies, including all those Mary mentioned and many more. J.D. Vance of Hillbilly Elegy fame was explicit in this, as was Tucker Carlson, and many others.......which should whet your appetite to read the whole thing.)
..."David Steinberg spent a decade as PJ Media's New York editor. He has been closely investigating Ilhan Omar's background for years since she entered public life," Carlson began. "He's cultivated sources within the Minnesota Somali community. He knows as much about Omar's background as any reporter could know....She's stonewalling the MSM on the question. Who wouldn't?
...Carlson continued: "And then he makes this stunning allegation, sourced to members of the Minneapolis Somali community: 'In 1995 Ilhan entered the United States as a fraudulent member of the Omar family. That is not her family. The Omar family is a second unrelated family which was being granted asylum by the United States. The Omars allowed Ilhan, her genetic sister Sahra, and her genetic father Nur Said to use false names to apply for asylum as members of the Omar family. Ilhan's genetic family split up at this time. Ilhan's three other siblings, using their real names, managed to get asylum in the United Kingdom.'"...
...And now, on the right, we have the man with the biggest megaphone in the country leading a mob in chanting for the expulsion of a political opponent...--Dreher, inventing 'leading a ...chant...'And he's off!! (UPDATE: Trump says he 'disagrees' with that chant.)
...Trump’s lies about and attacks on Rep. Omar over the last several days are of a piece with his hostility to Muslims and his contempt for refugees and immigrants. He has made a point of targeting her on account of her race and religion.....Like anyone else who can see TeeVee and read Twitter, it is clear that "race" was never, ever, a part of Trump's game here. And of course, Trump--like any Christian or Jew--is sensibly concerned with SOME Muslims. The ones who take the Koran seriously, the ones who attack the USA or its allies, the ones who are killing and raping Catholics all over Africa, the ones who threaten our overseas allies.........and there are more.
...Lockhart not only attacked Trump and his administration, he also viciously attacked Trump supporters attending Wednesday night’s reelection campaign rally in Greenville, North Carolina, calling then an “angry crowd of resentful, uneducated people screaming for blood from the people of color who are stealing everything from them.”...OK, that deserves a considered response, and here it is:
Sleep still in my eyes, hair a la Anna on Elsa’s coronation day, groggily to my husband I stammered, “If an estimated 30 to 60 percent of Catholic priests are gay, what would happen if they all came out together? I mean, the Catholic Church would either have to deal or crumble. They already don’t have enough priests - look how they’re combining churches all over the place. Don’t the priests see the power they have together? And is it not their duty to themselves, to us all, Catholics or not, to live truthfully and to love like Jesus? What if, 50 years after the Stonewall Riots, Catholic priests of all sexualities finally had enough support to stand together, hand-in-hand, unwilling to be oppressed any longer?”..."....of ALL sexualities?" How many are there?

...Church Militant reached out to the archdiocese of Milwaukee for comment about their approval of the retreat scheduled within their jurisdiction. Amy Grau, the communication director for the archdiocese, said: "The Archdiocese of Milwaukee is not connected to this event. In addition, there has been concern that the Racine Dominicans allowed their retreat center to be used by a group [New Ways Ministry] censured by the Church."...
...“Jesus Christ came to bring God to earth, so that man might find the way to heaven: that is why he founded the Church,” the Italian Monsignor said. “Instead, today’s clerics take care of the earth as if it were man’s permanent and lasting home. What is the symptom? They do not speak of the soul and therefore of its salvation.”
Msgr. Bux further noted that ideas once “denounced” by Joseph Ratzinger (as prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith) are now “coming to maturity” with the Amazon Synod.
“The Church is no longer considered the Mystical Body of Christ and the People of God oriented toward salvation, but a sociological phenomenon; thus it must deal with economics, ecology and politics, where at most it could intervene only for a moral judgment,” Msgr. Bux said. That was the general case. More specifically, it's the Jungle Synod...
He added that, under the influence of modernism, proponents of these ideas claim that “times have changed” and with them, “a new dogma” is needed. Yet he pointed out “this doesn’t answer the questions: who decided that times have changed? And is change always good?”...
....Speaking to the working document’s use of “inculturation,” Msgr. Bux said “it is presented in an inverted way: the intention is to return the Church in the Amazon to animism and spiritualism, making it withdraw from the Word that was announced to it through evangelization. ‘A natural religion with a Christian mask,’ as Cardinal Brandmüller said in his recent statement.”What we are seeing, before our very eyes, is the creation of a schism, largely engineered by the Rhine, with the opening salvo fired at the Second Vatican Council. The Tiber has now become polluted with that flow.
Asked about the working document’s praise for the “cosmovision” of indigenous peoples, Msgr. Bux said it represents a “blurring of reason” and a return to “natural religion” and “spiritualism.”...
...Trump has flaunted his scorn for the media-defined norms of the American political conversation. Under those informal rules, Republicans can be labeled racists with impunity, and America can be trashed as irredeemably racist, evil, and shameful. But any criticism of "people of color" for expressing such views is racist, as Nancy Pelosi discovered so recently....
...He also knows that people who already believe him to be a vulgar, racist, unacceptable "occupant of the White House" (as Ilhan Omar called him yesterday, unwilling to concede that he is a lawfully elected president) will criticize anything he says. So there is no loss to him in provoking more criticism from that camp.
The key group that he must worry about are the undecided voters who swing elections and the vaunted suburban women, who shun harshness and who live in neighborhoods where Trump may be less than popular. Plus all those conservatives who have gritted their teeth and supported him, even though his style is alien to their own....
Trump has forced [the House Democrats] back together and made The Squad the public face of the Democrats.So. The remarks were NOT "racist." Yes, they were designed to force a reaction--and they got it. Now Pelosi is embracing four Communists, one of which will NOT condemn Muslim terrorism, the others of which want "open borders." See Surber's clear vision on Trump's chess-game here.

...The Guatemalan official said that State Department officials in his country have been working with NGOs and hardcore leftists funded by George Soros to undermine efforts by the Trump administration to deal with the crisis along the U.S. southern border.Never identify a problem without offering a solution!!
“We have been working well with the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, and the U.S. intel community,” the official explained. “But the State Department is another issue altogether.”
The official continued, “Leftists in our country do not work in a vacuum. They work closely with Democrats in the U.S. and the liberal media to attack President Trump and make President Morales look bad.”...
A rather stunning report from Gateway Pundit outlines information contained within a lawsuit filing. The lawsuit, filed by Businessman Ed Butowsky, alleges Wikileaks founder Julian Assange confirmed to Fox News analyst Ellen Ratner that the DNC leaked emails were received from Seth Rich and his brother Aaron.Next thing you know, Epstein will turn out to be a majority owner of a pizza joint in D.C.
The details contained within the lawsuit filing (full pdf below) are stunning.
If this information is true and accurate, the DOJ claim of a Russian hack –based on assertions by DNC contractor, Crowdstrike– would be entirely false. Additionally the DC murder of Seth Rich would hold a far more alarming motive....
...Representative Omar’s father, was a party propagandist under the dictator and was responsible for ‘ideological’ aspects of the Red-Green revolution. This included providing the ideological/political justification for the massacres of the late eighties....(Like that "red" effect? I thought so.)
...The ministry of the Pope, therefore, is one of obedience to the Word of God. In respect of the Sacred Liturgy, this ministry is exercised, as the Catechism teaches, in the obedience of faith and with religious respect for the mystery of the liturgy. “The Pope is not an absolute monarch whose thoughts and desires are law.” Mutatis mutandis, neither is any bishop, priest, deacon, MC, Musical Director, liturgy committee or any other group or individual, no matter what their position or expertise. You see the problem? It's ......ahhh.........interesting enough with mal-formed diocesan priests (or shudder, Jesuits) who put their theological twisties into the liturgy. But it's even more interesting when the occupant of the Chair of Peter seems to favor a new "green" theology. Or a "liberation" theology. How will THAT be expressed in the Mass?
This brings us face to face with the second element of what is taught in paragraph 1125 of the Catechism: “the obedience of faith” and “religious respect for the mystery of the liturgy” that must be shown by all, from the Pope down.
Earlier I asserted that there was a disturbing issue in respect of Pope Pius XII’s exegesis of the premise lex orandi, lex credendi in Mediator Dei whereby he asserts that it is the rule of belief which determines the rule of prayer, and not the other way around. When this was published in 1947 the dangers inherent in this reversal may not have been all that apparent. Sadly, they have become all to clear in the ensuing decades.
For if the Sacred Liturgy (its rites, prayers, chants, and associated arts, etc.) are a “a constitutive element of the holy and living Tradition,” this organism, as handed on in tradition, is itself an essential source for experiencing the Faith and for knowing and reflecting upon what we believe: the Sacred Liturgy is itself theologia prima.5 However, if what we believe determines the rule of prayer, the liturgy can (or ought to) be refashioned according to changes in theology so as to reflect the latter. It is no longer a primary source of theology, but its mirror....
...A neo-scholastic sacramental theology which is disconnected from the living form of the Liturgy. On that basis, people might reduce the “substance” to the matter and form of the sacrament, and say: Bread and wine are the matter of the sacrament, the words of institution are its form. Only these two things are really necessary, everything else is changeable.6...In other words, reductionism. Remember hearing about "useless accretions and repetitions"?
... if one can reduce the Sacraments to valid matter and the correct form in one’s mind, one may ignore, disdain or even abuse the rites that surround them. The liturgical rites become incidentals and are therefore unimportant in themselves. They contain no authority in their own right and certainly demand no serious respect. They may be reduced, refashioned, replaced or dispensed according to the prevailing theological and ideological trends of a given time, whether that be by popes or their commissars, by episcopal conferences, local bishops, priests or lay liturgical potentates....Thus we saw altar girls, hootenannies, rock bands, clowns, "Mass on the floor," (yes....here in Milwaukee), and dance. Even in those parishes which observe some propriety, the Propers are completely absent--not only dumped in favor of "hymns," but not even mentioned in the weekly pamphlet. In the USA, the Offertory Proper has NEVER been published in the authorized NO missals. Yet the Propers are an integral part of every Mass!
....[I]t [is] a fact that subjectivity, not objectivity, has been the lot of the Sacred Liturgy for far too long, from the pre-conciliar disdain of sung or solemn Mass as being ‘too much unnecessary fuss’ (the expression “It’s the Low mass that matters!” comes right out of this stable…), to the liturgy being regarded as something which I may translate, celebrate and adapt according to our—or even my own—preferences, to the unforeseeable horizons of the proposed “organic progression of the liturgy” which embraces radical inculturation and more.8 Even more conservative or so-called “traditional” circles, not infrequently go beyond the bounds of what is given to us by the Church and select, adapt or ignore rites according to subjective will....Much like a fence or a wall, the rituals, vestments, motions, and Chants (Latin or vulgar) protect what is within: the offering of ourselves, the re-presentation of the Sacrifice, and the Communion. Once the fence is knocked down, the liturgy is re-shaped (mis-shaped) according to NewThink V.1 (or V.2, V.3.....), things go wrong.
...With segregation entrenched in much of Milwaukee’s north and northwest sides, this conclusion means the outlook is slim for improvement. As Luthern reports, “In Milwaukee, at least three in four black residents would need to relocate in order to live in fully integrated neighborhoods, wrote William H. Frey, author of a Brookings Institution study released late last year.”Of course, Mitchell is not a racist. He's a mostly-reformed ex-Democrat. (The tell? working for Dave Carley, a Kennedy 'crat of the first water). Unfortunately for him, Mitchell is a realist.
An unstated but significant implication is that prospects for many Milwaukee Blacks are subject largely to factors beyond their control. That is, with little chance for meaningful reduction in segregation, higher levels of violence are a given.
The alternative view — that Blacks have a primary role in shaping their lives — is fraught with potential for controversy. Any suggestion to that effect by a white person is guaranteed to spur charges of racial bias. This effectively silences voices — Black and white. It results in a narrow, constricted public discussion about how to address seemingly intractable problems.
The upshot is a disproportionate emphasis on actions that assume government has the primary role. The main losers in that dialogue are citizens who have accepted the view that their future primarily is tied to actions of elected officials in Madison and Washington....
...In preparing for that assignment, I reviewed data for census tracts in Milwaukee’s (segregated) near north side. I assumed the numbers were wrong when I read that more than seventy percent of children were born to and lived in single parent households. When told those in fact were correct numbers, my reaction was immediate: “That can’t work. No way.”
The research, of course, is voluminous and not in dispute as to the divergent prospects for children raised in one- and two-parent families. While segregation admittedly is a factor over which Milwaukee Blacks have little or no control, that’s decidedly not the case when it comes to birthrates and family formation. ...

...The most recent evidence against what trade expert Alan Tonelson calls Tariffmageddon scaremongering comes from Friday’s release of the producer-price index, which mostly measures the prices businesses receive for their goods and services. This rose a seasonally adjusted 0.1 percent in June from a month earlier, the Labor Department said. From a year earlier, the producer-price index increased by 1.7 percent.Tod, wo ist ein stachel?
The unchanged prices for goods less food and energy categories is especially notable because the prices for services is showing some healthy signs of inflation, rising 0.4 percent for the month. ...The article alleged investigators who handled the Palm Beach case said Krischer pressured them to downgrade charges against the billionaire to a misdemeanor, or to drop the case completely.
Joseph Recarey, a detective who worked the Epstein case, told The Herald that Alan Dershowtiz, Epstein’s lawyer, flew to Florida to meet privately with Krischer. So was Dershowitz being a "defense lawyer" or was he really a messenger from Clinton, or others still not mentioned?
Recarey also told The Herald that in May 2006, he drew up probable cause affidavits that charged Epstein and three associates with a slew of sex crimes. But instead of pushing forward with the case, Krischer referred the case to a state grand jury, which returned an indictment on a single count of soliciting prostitution.
According to The Herald, Recarey said Krischer told him he did not believe Epstein’s accusers. Only two out of more than a dozen of Epstein’s alleged victims testified before the grand jury....
