The "Nazi, Draconian, Union-Busting, Fascist"...Scott Walker...takes a distant back seat compared to the Ohio proposal.
1. Eliminates collective bargaining for state employees and employees of higher education institutions.
2. Eliminates salary schedules and step increases and replaces them with a merit pay system.
3. Eliminates continuing contracts for teachers after the bill’s effective date – All teachers would receive a single year contract year after year.
4. Eliminates seniority as a sole criterion for Reductions In Force (RIFs).
5. Requires employees to pay at least 20% of their healthcare costs.
6. Allows public employers to hire permanent replacement workers during a strike.
7. Limits bargaining for local government employees (including school districts) to issues of wages, hours and terms and conditions of employment.
Looks like Walker could add a few provisions, eh?

ReplyDeleteHELL, NO. If that happens, welcome to the South!
Why would ANYONE want to become a teacher, firefighter, police officer, etc. in that state? Talk about KILLING jobs!
Anonymous, You become a teacher to teach, a cop to protect, and a firefighter to save. If you are doing it for the money then you really should pursue a different career field.
ReplyDeleteOf course all the unions could simply walk off the job and quit. Let's see how many applicants line up for those jobs. I am willing to bet there would be more applicants than openings.

It's not about the money or benefits, it's about how you treat someone. You really think Walker truly cares about public employees? Don't insult my above average intelligence.
ReplyDeleteAnd as far as applicants coming in droves for these jobs? Perhaps in the short-term, but once they realize the "glass ceiling", they'll flee like the Cubans did in 1959.
"Don't insult my above average intelligence." Ok, then why don't you display it sometime?
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, public unions do not have the right to everything they want. They get what the state gives. Sorry but that is the way it is. Acting like a bunch of kids by calling in sick and causing schools to close which disrupts thousands of lives in not going to win any brownie points.
ReplyDeleteFace it, those jobs can be filled in a heartbeat so the unions are not arguing from a position of strength. They should have attacked with a PR war not a mob.

There is a conflict of interest when the person who determines your pay and benefits also benefits from your political support. This is a conflict big enough to get one fired in the private sector.
ReplyDeleteAs a Badger by birth it pains me to say this, but
ReplyDeleteGo Buckeyes!
