Attended a high-school graduation over the weekend. The children had been thoroughly instructed in the Classics, with solid mathematics, literature, philosophy, and science courses, plus very good graphic arts and musical extracurricular offerings.
The graduating class was relatively small, as you might expect. But what you would NOT expect was the next step taken by most of the grads: not "college." A small minority went that route. Most of them will be going to the local technical school, with a few choosing the military or apprenticeships.
Hmmmm.
Later, ran into a young fellow who told me that the graduating class from his high-school had (perhaps) half choosing traditional "college." His high school has a similar academic and extra-curricular set of offerings.
Neither of these schools were on the 'wrong side of the tracks,' either.
If I were a college administrator, I would be looking at early retirement......
