The Problem With Ockham

No, it's not that he was a Franciscan who had a very serious argument with a Pope over 'apostolic poverty.'  Not even that he was excommunicated for that argument.

Nope.

Ockham's problem was Nominalism, which led to a whole lot of other problems, many of which we are seeing today.

...Relying on Gregory, Hahn, and Wiker, I myself take Ockham to task in my book The Obscurity of Scripture for his role in creating the philosophical framework that helped give birth to the Reformation.

It’s no surprise, then, that philosopher James M. Jacobs in Seat of Wisdom: An Introduction to Philosophy in the Catholic Tradition, after describing several philosophical errors, labels nominalism “the most perennially pernicious of these philosophical assumptions.” That’s a remarkable claim, especially given that Ockham was neither an Enlightenment skeptic nor an atheistic deconstructionist....

...Nominalism assumes that there is no objective order in creation. It reflects not a wonder or awe at cosmic goodness but rather a pessimistic doubt about reality that demands that people impose order on an otherwise unintelligible creation. This entails that the concepts of truth and goodness are ultimately arbitrary constructs the philosopher creates to prescribe an order for a fractious world.--(quoting Jacobs)...

...Jacobs calls nominalism a “universal acid” that “disintegrates the coherence of philosophy in every area: metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, politics, and aesthetics.” Assuming nature has no intelligible order leads to the conclusion that all attempts to find meaning in human existence are futile....

That's how we get to Blessing of Pervert Couples and Tranny-dom.

...Thus, for example, in the nominalist emphasis on divine sovereignty: God is capable of doing anything, and is not constrained even by his own being, and thus does not need to use forms as universal causal principles. And if there are no forms, there are no universal natures such as humanity – every single being is a radically unique individual not limited by human nature....

Oh, yes, there's more!

...Further, if the universe is one in which God possesses absolute freedom to act arbitrarily, He would be free to declare good evil and evil good....

Mohammed chose the option 'in which God possesses absolute freedom to act arbitrarily.  In order to justify his position, Mohammed denied the Trinity, thus eliminating the personal relationships therein; the "love/creation" mystery.  He could have kept the Trinity if he'd known about Ockham!

Of course, Nominalism leads to materialism and thus to Communism and/or Libertarianism.

...The elimination of a common human nature leads to the belief that society exists for the sake of the individual (libertarianism), or that the individual exists for the sake of society (collectivism as found in communism or fascism)....

Does Franny1 buy Nominalism?

Since he thinks Catholicism and communism have 'common goals,' it's entirely likely.  But Franny1 is a special case; it's likely he doesn't believe in Catholicism at all; thus Ockham is irrelevant to him.

One more observation:  where you find Gnosticism, you most assuredly will find Nominalism, as the latter feeds the formerWithout prior form, a Gnostic takes the opportunity to manufacture a form to his liking.

Chaos ensues, and we all know who loves Chaos!

  1. Nominalism assumes that there is no objective order in creation????

Wrong wrong wrong wrong WRONG. Let’s Go to a very old prayer that gives us ORDER.

…….The Lorica of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is best known for only one of its verses (the one that begins "Christ with me"). But the full version, printed here, incorporates all the elements of Catholic morning prayer: It is an Act of Faith (expressing the Catholic teaching on the Trinity and on Christ); an Act of Hope (in God's protection throughout the day and throughout life, as well as in eternal salvation); and an Act of Charity (in the love expressed for God). It is, therefore, an ideal morning prayer, especially for those who have a devotion to Saint Patrick.

Tradition suggests that this popular prayer was written by Patrick himself in 433 CE, but modern scholars now consider it to be the work of an anonymous author that was probably written in the eighth century……..

Chestplate of St. Patrick (Full Prayer)

This is the full “Lorica of St. Patrick” prayer and it’s the only deliverance prayer I do every day. It’s worth saving on your note-app or printing:

I bind myself today to a strong power, an invocation of the Trinity. I believe in a Threeness, with confession of a Oneness in the Creator of the Universe. I bind myself today to the power of Christ’s birth with His baptism, to the power of His crucifixion with His burial, to the power of His resurrection with His ascension, to the power of His coming in the Judgment of Doom. I bind myself today to the power of the ranks of Cherubim, in obedience of Angels, in service of Archangels, in hope of resurrection for reward, in prayers of Patriarchs, in preaching of Apostles, in faiths of Confessors, in innocence of Holy Virgins, in deeds of righteous men. I bind myself today to the power of Heaven, in light of Sun, in brightness of Snow, in splendour of Fire, in speed of Lightning, in swiftness of Wind, in depth of Sea, in stability of Earth, in compactness of Rock. I bind myself today to God’s Power to pilot me, God’s might to uphold me, God’s wisdom to guide me, God’s eye to look before me, God’s ear to hear me, God’s Word to speak to me, God’s hand to guard me, God’s way to lie before me, God’s shield to protect me, God’s host to secure me, Against snares of demons, Against seductions of vices, Against lusts of nature, Against every one who wishes ill to me, Afar and near, Alone and in a multitude. So have I invoked all God’s powers between myself and every cruel, merciless power which may come against my body and my soul, against incantations of false prophets, against black laws of heathenry, against false laws of heretics, against craft of idolatry, against spells of women and smiths and druids, against every knowledge that defiles men’s souls. Christ to protect me today, Against poison, against burning, against drowning, against death-wound, until a multitude of rewards come to me! Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me! Christ below me, Christ above me. Christ at my right, Christ at my left! Christ in breadth, Christ in length, Christ in height! Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me, Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks to me, Christ in every eye that sees me, Christ in every ear that hears me! I bind myself today to a strong power, an invocation of the Trinity. I believe in a Threeness with confession of a Oneness, in the Creator of the universe. Salvation is the Lord’s, salvation is the Lord’s, salvation is Christ’s. May Thy salvation, O Lord, be always with us. Amen
