Cupich vs. Catholics. Surprised?

We've always held Cdl. Blase Cupich ("Cardinal Cupcake" according to Chicago cops) in very, very, low regard.  Rumors, rambling, reports, and ravings about the man have circulated for years; there's a helluvalotta smoke, and I use that adjective deliberately.  In sum:  he's a nasty little turd.

While no official document has surfaced yet, it appears that Cupich has decided to eradicate the Institute of Christ the King, Sovereign Priest (ICK) from Chicago.  While ICK owns the church property which they occupy, Cupich--as the Archbishop--has the canonical power to revoke the ICK's permission to celebrate public Masses and to hear confessions (except in case of emergency.)

...LifeSiteNews has learned from Keith Armato, a leading Catholic layman close to the situation, that the archbishop of Chicago had demanded for months now that the Institute signs a document with five or six points. Among the points they had to sign – each priest individually – was that the Novus Ordo rite is the only true expression of the Roman rite. This formulation stems directly from Pope Francis’ own document Traditionis Custodes, an explanation that makes it clear that the traditional Roman rite has to disappear altogether. Moreover, the Institute was also asked to accept a procedure, according to which the priests of the Institute have to ask Cardinal Cupich for permission to celebrate the traditional Latin Mass and that he might grant it for two years, but that he also could revoke that permission at any given time....

This is a very big deal.  The above report states that only about 500 were regular attendees at the ICK's Sunday Masses, but those 500 are only representatives of at least another 10,000 or so around the USA and another large amount in Europe.

It won't end there, either.  Cupich is the metropolitan for Wisconsin (and other Midwestern States) and therefore, the Milwaukee and Rockford ICK establishments are endangered species.  Further, Cupich is a member of the Vatican's dicastery for Bishops, from which perch he can cause a lot more trouble for Bishops who cooperate with ICK in the US and world-wide.

This is not the first time that a Bishop or Cardinal has commenced war against Catholics.  Ask Athanasius about that, or Joan of Arc.  We're used to persecution from corrupt and sinful people, whether wearing a pectoral cross, a scimitar, or the hammer and sickle.

But it doesn't make it any more fun.

  2. "Cupich is the metropolitan for Wisconsin (and other Midwestern States)"

No; he is the metropolitan for Illinois. The metropolitan of Wisconsin is Archbishop Listecki. And there are archbishops in Iowa, Missouri, and Indiana.

Now it is true that this is almost irrelevant in that he wields outsize influence.

  3. Your take is correct.

But as I understood it, that 'outsized (and terrible) influence' includes some authority over a bunch of metropolitans nearby.

If he has ZERO authority over Wisconsin, then ICK here is 'safe'--until a new Archbishop is named in Milwaukee. And that will be soon, as +Listecki is near retirement age.
