The Brewers: More Tax Subsidies??

With exquisite timing--just as a recession begins--the Brewers are quietly banging "gimme money" drums at the taxpayers.

You'll never believe the reason.

..."addressing the long-term needs of a ballpark is no small task."

"Examples from across the country show ballparks becoming obsolete in many cases, and increasingly expensive to maintain in all cases, as costs and requirements from Major League Baseball continue to escalate," Schlesinger said, in a statement to the Journal Sentinel.

"American Family Field is, fortunately, an excellent entertainment venue, so the question is how to keep it that way for generations to come. The Brewers are committed to working with the stadium district to find a way to do so," Schlesinger said....

The ballpark is 'obsolete'?  County Stadium was not "obsolete."  But it didn't provide enough different revenue streams for.........ahhh..........Bud Selig.  So Bud lobbied Tommy Thompson, who loved to spend taxpayer money, and got a new stadium so he could sell the team at a handsome profit.  He was so good at that that MLB made him Commissioner.

Anyhow.

You won't be surprised to know that 'leaving Milwaukee' has been voiced.  Of course, the Brewers didn't say that.

As to what are MLB "requirements"?  That's not part of the news story, but you can safely bet that 'more revenue streams' is one of them.  Look no further than Lambeau's venture into theme-park world.

Screw MLB.  Bring back Borchert Field.
