Yes, it was Armenians who were slaughtered.

But there's more to it:  Armenians were largely Eastern-Rite Catholics.  Turks were largely Muslim.

You could call it 'mass martyrdom' too. 

By the way, THIS is the error of the Bush-the-Dumber Administration.  They always thought in terms of 'nationality,' never in terms of 'religion' in the Middle East.  That's because Bush-the-Dumber and his NeoCon pals were being PC, and remain mostly PC today.

As to 'why', your guess is as good as mine.
