Name That President

Here's what the newspaper had to say about a recently-elected President:

“…he is no more capable of becoming a statesman, nay, even a moderate one, than the braying ass can become a noble lion. People now marvel how it came to pass that ....xx.... should have been selected as the representative man of any party. His weak, wishy-washy, namby-pamby efforts, imbecile in matter, disgusting in manner, have made us the laughing stock of the whole world.”

If you guessed "Abraham Lincoln", you win the chicken dinner. 

But you didn't, did you?  Don't lie.  I can see you drop your eyes to your toes.

BTW, he was elected with only 39.8% of the popular vote.  And the Lynching Party opposed him, too, just like today!  Who says history doesn't repeat itself?
