According to New Ways Ministry, a Portland, OR. high-school has changed its employment policy to include gay and "married"-gay employees.
A headline on this site claims that Abp. Sample "approved" this change.
But there is no evidence that the Abp. did so. While the school's Board unanimously approved it, the Abp. is not a member of that Board, and there is no statement from the Chancery cited in the article, nor in the background info provided by New Ways or the school.
Let's remember that New Ways Ministry is as reliable a "news source" as is Dan Rather. They are, in reality, propagandists, not journalists. So there's that little problem.
What IS happening, however, is a direct full-frontal challenge to Abp. Sample's authority. It remains to be seen exactly how this plays out.

Hello,
ReplyDeleteI wanted to respond to your post.
You take issue with the author of
http://wearethelightbrigade.blogspot.com/2015/08/archbishop-alexander-k-sample-approves.html
I wrote that post.
Please note the ? in the title.
The ? signifies that we are questioning how on earth this deal
went through without the blessing of the Archbishop.
In addition, he has the power to stop that deal in it’s tracks.
I believe most readers of this scandal are wondering when he is going to step in.
When you scroll down you will read:
David Renshaw, communications director for the Archdiocese of Portland, spoke with ThinkProgress shortly before entering a meeting to discuss the school’s decision. He said Portland Archbishop Alexander Sample does not yet have a statement on the matter, but confirmed that “Canon law does say that the bishop does have oversight or jurisdiction” over St. Mary’s. Earlier this year, Sample published a statement saying that he was “saddened” by the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide.
“We don’t know what the thought process was during the reversal,” Renshaw said, adding that Church officials would like enter into talks with school administrators soon.
Also please consider:
“Bishops have quite wide powers under canon law to deal with dissident or disobedient institutions. If an institution is run directly by the diocese, the bishop has direct jurisdiction and authority. This is especially the case with Catholic schools which, according to Canon 804 are "subject to the authority of the Church.’ Furthermore, under this canon, it is the responsibility of "the diocesan bishop to regulate and watch over [them].’
The bishop, then, is ultimately responsible for the state of such institutions. “

We've got problems here in Oregon. Pray for our Archbishop.
"VOCAL" is a long-time blogger of "issues" in the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon, and I recommend folks who care about accuracy to check that blog.
ReplyDeleteI have been watching this unfold and would like to share some points, although I am not one to make comments:
1. Abp A.K. Sample is a great guy, sincere, conscientious, holy and exactly what you would want in a bishop spiritually.
2. The board of the school made this decision without Sample's knowledge in an emergency secret meeting Wednesday night.
3. They released their latest decision (to rescind their rescinding of the original offer) to the MEDIA Thursday morning.
4. Sample had already issued a PREVIOUS statement (prior to the on-campus hooliganism, lawyer threats, and the Wed night session) SUPPORTING the school's decision to NOT hire a lesbian as a counselor for girls.
Sample also said in the same statement that his understanding of the law is that the school is free to make this decision according to protection of religious freedom.
All stmts from Sample and David have had a respectful tone to ALL and a flavor of honoring the Faith.
5. SINCE all this rannygazoo, Sample has issued (via David) 2 short statements. 1, The conversation between SMA and Archdiocese is ONGOING. 2, To respect both sides (AH, 2 sides, good!), the "conversation" is private.
6. The key point is that Sample clearly is not happy with the school's flip-flop on lesbian counselors. If he were, he would have an easy out with some yada yada about independence of academics, respecting the board, academic free exchange of ideas, the usual nonsense. NOTE: SAMPLE DID NOT SAY ANY OF THAT, as some bishops would. That means he is trying to figure out if this can be salvaged.
7. Finally, for those that don't know much about this bizarre archdiocese (also the first ever to declare legal bankruptcy), Sample is fairly new and inherited this mess from Abp Vlazny and his cohort Chancellor Mary Jo Tully.

ReplyDeleteThis is a response to another bloggers question.
We hope you have time to read it.
It is important to click the links on the highlighted words.
What is infecting the Diocese of Portland is also at work across our entire nation.
People need to get informed and stand up with our Bishops against this sickness.

Albert, et. al.: I have no doubt that Abp Sample is being tried by fire, just as Bp. Morlino has been in Madison, (etc., etc., etc.)
ReplyDelete*Cough*...I live in the Milwaukee archdiocese, so--for cryin' out loud--I GET IT!!
If Abp Sample doesn't come out with a statement on this mess in the next 7 days I will be VERY surprised; but he can't be like Donald Trump and simply say whatever comes to mind. There's a canon-legal component AND a doctrinal component here, so it will take a little time.
Oremus.
