Actually, Ms. Althouse, It's "Allowed"

Ms. Althouse allows an error in her discourse which was un-intentional.  (She's merely repeating what Mourdock said, which was also an error.)

Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock struggled or purported to struggle with his anti-abortion principles and the problem of rape. Should there be a rape exception?
"I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God. And, I think, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen."
And apparently, also, God intended — by Mourdock's lights — that Mourdock be kicked around for professing that everything that happens is something that God intended.

Umnnnhh.....no.

God allows evil to occur by virtue of His gift of free will.

God does not intend that evil occurs.

Big difference.

  1. I think the issue is that Mourdock phrased his statement REALLY badly.

It is certainly true that God never intends evil; He only allows it. Thus, the rape is allowed by Him, but certainly not intended.

It is also true that life is a good that IS intended by God. In the case of pregnancy by rape, God is allowing evil (rape), but choosing to bring good (life) from it.

Abortion in case of rape is quite literally killing the child for the sins of the father.

Mind you, I have no problems when appropriate punishment is meted to the offender...
