Corn-A-Holing Your Engine

From the Detroit Bureau, we get this.

A new study suggests the federal government’s decision to increase the amount of ethanol in gasoline could have “adverse results,” which several industry trade groups say translates into the likelihood it could wreck some engines.

...The study suggests that using 15% alcohol at the pump can result in a wide range of engine problems, including valve damage, loss of compression, diminished performance and lower fuel economy.

Noting that older vehicles and most powered equipment were not designed to tolerate a higher level of ethanol, Mitch Bainwol, the president and CEO of Auto Alliance, warned that “many vehicles on the road today are at risk of harm from E15. The unknowns concern us greatly, since only a fraction of vehicles have been tested to determine their tolerance to E15.”

So.

The benefits of Corn-A-Hole consist of the following:  higher prices for food staples in Third World countries (meaning they could starve); and damaged or blown engines in automobiles and power equipment.

So far, they're batting 1.000!!!

  1. It's already highly destructive to small engines. I've had two chainsaws burn up their pistons because of ethanol. There's lots of steps you can take to limit the danger to the engine, but there's nothing you can really do to prevent the harm (except buy ethanol free gas!).

  2. Grim, Here is an FYI

Stihl is selling "MOTO MIX"T fuel.
It stays fresh for two years.
It has a fuel stabelizer, NO ETHANOL,
    92 Octain

But it is really expensive stuff.
They charge almost $8.00 for just 32 oz...

If you use a 2 cycle motor just once a
year it may be worth it. ....

  3. Yeah, roger that. I found that stuff after losing my last piston.

It's maddening. Regular gas would work fine, with a little fuel stabilizer -- you could keep a few gallons on hand in the woodshed. Now, if you do that, kiss your saw (or lawnmower, or weed trimmer) goodbye.

And if you want stuff that you can keep? Try $32 a gallon for fuel that won't kill your stuff.

I have an idea for fixing this problem cheaply, though: it involves surplus tar and feathers.

  4. No-ethanol gasoline is sold at a Kwik-Trip store in Cottage Grove, WI.

  5. Non-ethanol regular gas is also sold at Road Ranger in East Troy and non-ethanol premium at the Shell station.

  6. Or, north, at the Tri Par on Hwy 57, just beyond the Sheboygan-Oz. county line. Or the BP in Campbellsport.

I noted my mileage improves from 5-10% with non-obama gas. So, worth the drive.

  7. There's a great website, actually, that maps stations selling ethanol-free gas. Unfortunately, none of them are anywhere near me.

  8. Thanks Grim for the info

Here is an interesting Law we should try to introduce in as many states as possible to
    combat Obama Gas

  11. OBAMA GAS WILL KILL YOUR ENGINE

............Gasoline containing higher than 10% ethanol content (e.g. 85% ethanol-E85) cannot be used in STIHL power equipment. Doing so will cause major engine damage and is not covered by STIHL’s Limited Warranty Policy...............

Nice to start the day out with a laugh.

Next, I expect to read about "European-style Socialist Gas".......

  13. Haha This Obama guy is one powerful dude. He invented Obama gas over a decade ago with support from just about every GOP congressman who represented a mostly rural constituency.
