Marginal Romney

Sharp observation from RedState:

...Romney is steadily outpolling any one of his individual rivals, cementing his frontrunner status. Two, his frontrunner status derives entirely from the division among his opponents: the conservatives have consistently outpolled the moderates. And three, despite winning his home state of Massachusetts by a 60-point, 220,000 vote margin on Super Tuesday and despite none of the conservatives being on the ballot in Virginia, Romney’s not getting any stronger – even with Perry and Bachmann out of the race and Cain not drawing a single recorded vote, the conservatives drew a majority of the votes on Tuesday.

Yup.

  1. From a Weekly Standard email authored by Jonathan Last:

The Virginia result might even be more eye-popping than Ohio. Romney was heads-up against Ron Paul in a purple, mid-Atlantic state. And he couldn’t even get to 60 percent of the vote. That Paul was able to pull 40 percent of voters in a meaningless contest suggests that there is a segment of voters eager to go out of their way to vote against Mitt Romney. That’s not the sign of a great candidate.

    A bit of slice-and-dice:

Ron Paul — yes, Ron Paul — won nine counties (Buckingham, Charles City, Craig, Floyd, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, Surry, and Warren) and eight cities, which appear to be reported separately from counties (Charlottesville, Covington, Lynchburg (!), Manassas Park, Norfolk, Norton, and Portsmouth).
Paul even got 35% in the RINOland of Fairfax County in Suburban DC.
The turnout was small, but the anti-Romney revulsion is great.

  2. Well well well... It's NOT gonna be Gingrich OR Santorum who clinch the nomination.

So. Who are you gonna vote for? Obama?!?

  3. No, it will not be Gingrich

Gee. Romney doesn't have the 1441 delegates he needs, so now it's time for him to shove Santorum out.

Good luck, MitBama. Remember Gerry Ford?

  4. Romney has to run the table and win 2/3 of the remaining primaries/caucases.

  5. Excuse me, I should have typed that SANTORUM has to win 2/3.

  6. Doesn't matter. Romney will win the GOP nomination. He probably will select a VP that will satisfy conservatives. And Dad29, disgruntled, neomom, etc. will vote for Romney regardless of their disgust for him and what he stands for. So much for principles!

  7. Romney is my third choice of those remaining, but I will vote for him in November if that is what the end result is,

A marginal Romney is still infinitely better than the current White House resident.
