A prominent Milwaukee business leader said Wednesday that the community needs to discuss "at an appropriate time" the idea of extending the Miller Park stadium sales tax as a way of funding a new arena for the Milwaukee Bucks.
Timothy Sheehy, leader of the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce, a pro-business group, floated the idea at a civic forum.
The Bradley Center is 23 years old. An antique, says Sheehy.
Sheehy repeated what Bradley Center officials have been saying for years: The arena, built in 1988, is aging and is not capable of generating new revenue for an NBA franchise. A new facility is needed, he said. What Sheehy does NOT say is that the NBA franchise spends too damn much money, which is the usual cause of "needing more revenues."
Put another way, Sheehy prefers to spend taxpayers' money on Brewers and Bucks. Good. Let's have that discussion.
Herbie couldn't even wait until his boughtandpaidfor term ended before the 'discussion' began?
ReplyDeleteShame on Sheey, Herbie and his classmate Bud. The last thing I want to do is subsidize the juvenile hobby of junk bond dealers and/or 'philantrophists' obsessed with steroid infested or 'unmotivated' adolescents.
Meanwhile, no discussion much less plan to proceed with Milwaukee's real future in freshwater.
The freshwater (and salt-water) initiative will do just fine, since they won't be sucking up umpty-zillion tax dollars to get things done.
ReplyDeleteAnd that's one of the reasons I'm against ANY new taxes! This was to be a 'temporary tax' - just for Miller Park. Well now that we have suckered you slobs into paying it, lets use it for other things too - like the telephone tax that was initiated to fund the Mexican-American war and was only recently removed.
ReplyDeleteWhat a crock!
So now the Bucks are threatening to leave if they don't get a new facility? Let them leave! I'm tired of overpaid players and overly rich owners blackmailing the ordinary citizens to get their way. And I'm not impressed that Miller Park "just had to have" a new scoreboard to keep up with the Joneses.
Of course I have zero interest in basketball. Haven't followed it since the days of the "Big O" and Lew Alcindor. Okay, so I'm dating myself...
