A friend sent me the poll results which partly underlie this article. What I didn't see was what seems to be a clear "cause-and-effect" item--until I saw this post.
This week the Public Religion Research Institute released a poll showing, as their press release said "Catholics are more supportive of gay and lesbian rights than the general public and other Christians, according to a new report released today."
Well, OK. It's a poll, and it's prolly accurate with the usual caveats.
Look a little further and what do we find?
"Compared to the general church-going public, Catholics are significantly less likely to hear about the issue of homosexuality from their clergy, but those who do are much more likely to hear negative messages. Only about 1-in-4 (27%) Catholics who attend church services regularly say their clergy speak about the issue of homosexuality, but nearly two-thirds (63%) of this group say the messages they hear are negative."
So: Catholic pastors are not spending a lot of time on the questions surrounding homosexuality, homosexual conduct, and artificial marriage.
No surprise, then, that Catholics have an "understanding" problem, eh?
Seriously, I don't recall the last time my "pastor" ever spoke about any hot-button issue.
ReplyDeleteHomosexuality is totally off his radar - he would NEVER discuss it.
Never hear about the evils of contraception, homosexuality, or masturbation from any pulpits in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.
ReplyDeleteIn the Milwaukee archdiocese, these are ten-foot-pole topics; they'd certainly have a negative effect on raising funds for Prayer Gardens, church "renovations," gymnasiums, and "activity centers," and it's those fund-raising activities that take precedence over things like, say, decent homiletics, or even effective religious ed programs when pastors seek ego-legacy over the care of parishioners' souls. Sad, but that's definitely the story at my parish.
ReplyDeleteAquinas, I think we go to the SAME parish...
ReplyDeleteThat would be the parish where, last weekend, the pastor gave a rambling "homily" in which every character in the Broadway show Le Mis was mentioned, linear narrative was never established, inspriation was non-existent, and logic was shredded. But, hey!! The money's rolling in (in this economy!!—he must be successful!!) and our Prayer Gardens will be in full bloom in just weeks! Would you like to buy a planting?
ReplyDeleteThe emperor has NO clothes. But he does have an overkill multi-speaker system (how I would have loved to be that salesman when it came to bidding the audio system for the church!!) so we can hear every jewel that drips from his mouth. Unbelievable.
Practicing homosexuality is an abomination.
ReplyDeletePracticing homosexuality has aways been an abomination.
Practicing homosexuality will always be an abomination and a heinous Mortal Sin.
Any "Catholic" who supports, in thought, word, or deed, practicing homosexuality is NOT a Catholic, no matter what they say or do...or think.
Period.
It IS that simple.
Lv 18:22
22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind: because it is an abomination.

Lv 20:13

26 For this cause, God delivered them up to shameful affections. For their women have changed the natural use into that use which is against nature.
27 And, in like manner, the men also, leaving the natural use of the women, have burned in their lusts, one towards another: men with men, working that which is filthy and receiving in themselves the recompense which was due to their error.
28 And as they liked not to have God in their knowledge, God delivered them up to a reprobate sense, to do those things which are not convenient.
29 Being filled with all iniquity, malice, fornication, avarice, wickedness: full of envy, murder, contention, deceit, malignity: whisperers,

24 Defile not yourselves with any of these things with which all The Nations have been defiled, which I will cast out before you,
25 And with which The Land is defiled: the abominations of which I will visit, that It may vomit out Its inhabitants.
26 Keep ye My Ordinances and My Judgments: and do not any of these abominations. Neither any of your own Nation, nor any stranger that sojourneth among you.
27 For all these detestable things the inhabitants of The Land have done, that were before you, and have defiled it.

To Saint Revolution--My God said that your God is wrong, so nyahhh!
ReplyDeleteThere is only one God.
ReplyDeleteThere is not my God and your god.
I have written The Word Of God.
How can God be wrong to Himself?
By your own words you have judged yourself a minion of satan.
Mk 03:28-29
28 Amen I say to you that all sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and the blasphemies wherewith they shall blaspheme:
29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost, shall never have forgiveness, but shall be guilty of an everlasting sin.
“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves."
ReplyDeleteMatthew 7:15
St. Revolution--I'll make sure to asl my priest on Sunday if I'm a minion of Satan.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to rape you on Sunday.
ReplyDeleteMe too. Unlubed.
ReplyDeleteTo Anonymous:
ReplyDeleteYou're too stupid for Heaven.
You're even too stupid for Satan.
If dumb things written in a blog were feet, you'd be a bigger toehead than you already are.
The first soul ever that BOTH Heaven AND Hell don't want.
What a concept.
What a jackass...
To Anonymous:
ReplyDeleteYou ARE a minion of satan.
I'm confirming it.
So don't bother asking me on Sunday.
Stay away from me on Sunday. Pea soup vomit always stains my Cassock.
Amityville's looking for a new resident...move there.
There are many lined up to help you pack.
Now repeat 100 times: I am a minion of satan, I am a minion of satan...
That's the boy...uh, I mean, minion.
Argh.
Dad29--I thought you said the left generally displayed violent tendencies.
ReplyDeleteIt is safe to say that your soul-o-meter is at all-time low. God is watching and he does not approve of you allowing these vile comments and threats to remain your holy site.
Your priest would be shocked at your utter disregard for human life. I'll say a prayer for you on Sunday!
[an] all-time low.
ReplyDelete[at] your holy site.

ReplyDeleteSimply some thoughts.
You have to understand that "you open yourself up" when you write such things as:
"...my God said that your God is wrong, so nyahhh!...",
and, again,
"...I'll make sure to asl [ask(?)(SP)] my priest on Sunday if I'm a minion of Satan...".
You cannot "write out of two sides of your mouth".
It also begs the question as to which god you are going to say your prayers to when you, by your own words, blaspheme the concept of more than one God.
It is obvious you have confusions and issues of your own. This is really what you should speak with your Priest about.
Your attempt at bringing soft-written remonstrations and more Christ-like "decorum" to the Dad29 blog is appreciated but would be much more credible if not tainted with hypocrisy.
I do not write this with any animosity nor hate.
Corporal Work Of Mercy: Admonish The Sinner.
Make sure you are pure enough to admonish...and not hypocritical.
Again, simply some thoughts.
Take them as you will...
What? Christ's notion of decorum only applies if you have favorably judged the tone, purity and political opinions of the person who reminded you of Christ's message?
ReplyDeleteTone, purity, and political opinions?!
ReplyDeleteWhat the hell are you "jabbering" about?!
This guy (Anonymous) basically wrote that there was more than one God and then proceeded to write about praying to one God and talking to his Priest...Catholic, I assume.
You can't be Christian and believe there are different gods and different truths.
And you sure the hell can't be Catholic and believe that.
If fact, you can't be Catholic and just believe anything you want. If you do...you ain't Catholic...no matter how much you kid yourself.
Tone, purity, and political opinions have nothing to do with anything.
TRUTH is TRUTH.
Anonymous is being remonstrated for writing false doctrine with, what he thinks is, humorist arrogance...it's really blasphemy...and it isn't funny.
Did you read anything I have written?
The great enemies of Holy Mother Church: humanism and pluralism.
Now you, Foust, come along defending humanism.
Where is it ever all about you? Or about you at all? God doesn't give a shit about your tone, purity, and political opinions.
Have you ever read Job? You don't matter. Anonymous doesn't matter. I don't matter. None of us matter...opinions, neither.
Where at all did Anoonymous remind anyone of God's Truth?
I know I tried to and did.
You people ignorantly peddle humanism...and the worst part is, you don't even know it.
"God doesn't give a shit about your tone, purity, and political opinions."
ReplyDeleteActually, God cares about EVERYONE and EVERYTHING. And he certainly is judging you, St. Revolution, right now, this very instant.
"You can't be Christian and believe there are different gods and different truths."
Another sheep in wolf's clothing. Beware of the charlatan!
John Foust is under criminal investigation for filing a false police report.
ReplyDeleteUp early, Anony? Victims don't "file police reports."
ReplyDeleteTO: Anonymous 3/28/2011 12:10 AM:
ReplyDeleteYou believe there are different gods and different truths in Christianity?
You truly are the devil's own...
"Another sheep in wolf's clothing..."?
Don't you mean, "...another wolf in sheep's clothing..."?
There is nothing left here.
Sell your soul, you minion of Doctor Faustus.
Truly unbelieveable.
End of this story.
Lk 09:05
And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off even the dust of your feet, for a testimony against them.
Mt 10:14-1
And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words: going forth out of that house or city shake off the dust from your feet. Amen I say to you, it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.
