Barrett's MMSD. Yup, a Tax Increase!

Fortunately, we live outside the MMSD's reach.

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District may raise the tax levy by 4.4 percent in 2011 to raise more money for work on private property to prevent sewer backups.

The district is proposing to spend $150 million between 2011 and 2020 to repair leaking private laterals or disconnect foundation drains that dump water into sewers and contribute to backups. A 4.4 percent MMSD tax levy increase next year would raise $8 million for the work.

The district commissioners will also consider how quickly to increase the MMSD tax levy in the next decade for work on private pipes. A more aggressive proposal, which commissioners will consider, calls for 6 percent annual tax increases between 2012 and 2016, raising $100 million in the next six years.
