Southworth Starts a Battle Over "How-To" Sex-Ed

This will advance the debate. Happy to see that he's willing!

A district attorney is telling Juneau County schools to abandon their sex education courses, saying a new curriculum law could lead to criminal charges against teachers for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Starting in the fall, the new law requires schools that have sex education programs to tell students how to use condoms and other contraceptives. Juneau County District Attorney Scott Southworth said such education encourages sex among children, which is illegal, and could lead to charges against teachers.

The new law "promotes the sexualization - and sexual assault - of our children," Southworth wrote in a March 24 letter to officials within five school districts. He urged the districts to suspend their sex education programs and transfer their anatomy curriculum to a science course until the legislature changes the law.

"Forcing our schools to instruct children on how to utilize contraceptives encourages our children to engage in sexual behavior, whether as a victim or an offender," he wrote. "It is akin to teaching children about alcohol use, then instructing them on how to make mixed alcoholic drinks."

Hoo-Rah!!

  1. Good for DA Southworth! It's a pity there wasn't someone like him in the UK where that horse is already out of the barn. Now they're moving on to forcing Catholic schools to teach about abortion and contraception - or at minimum the availability of same...

  2. Unfortunately, were the DA to act, some pet liberal judge would summarily throw out the charges...

  3. I grew up in Juneau County and was taught in sex education classes with an almost identical plan of teaching as is suggested in this "new law". Our teen pregnancy rate was almost non-existent because we were armed with information and facts. It doesn't teach you "how to have sex". That is an absurd assumption. It teaches you the negative aspects and how an unwanted pregnancy can affect you and those around you.
Southworth is abusing the office of the District Attorney by sending these threatening letters. He is imposing his moral views on others - irrespective of the law. And, he is very wrong to try to take away this very vital information away from the students.
