Yah, we've heard this. The Gummint owns GM, and wants Toyota out of the way.
Long-form of the same idea.
Interesting. Not quite compelling, but interesting.
Of course, this is a factor:
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is advising owners of recalled Toyotas to stop driving them and get them fixed.
LaHood's warning came Wednesday in testimony before a House Appropriations subcommittee on transportation. LaHood says his advice to owners is to "stop driving it. Take it to a Toyota dealer because they believe they have a fix for it."
Frankly, I wouldn't take LaHood's advice on any matter except how to steal-and-spend, which does lie well within his area of expertise.
But it adds to the plot-theory.
Along these lines. Does anyone (beside the EPA) actually believe Chevys get better gas mileage than Hondas? What a joke.
ReplyDeleteI think the fix is in. This "accelerator pedal" issue has been out there for a long time - and not just Toyota. It's generally been assessed as "operator error". Why all this now? Toyota is, arguable, the standard by which all others are measures. Not just in automaking, but in all manufacturing worldwide.
ReplyDeleteI think there's reason to think something is afoot.
Yeah definately. The administration is intentionally undermining Toyota so people buy Chevys.
ReplyDeleteYou're killing me.
Tell me why it doesn't at least bear a look, considering the "coincidence". You can throw around bullshit, or you can actually make an argument.
ReplyDeleteI'm not saying it is. I'm just sayin'.
If nothing else, the Administration has secured college-tuition money for the chilluns of P I lawyers for the next 20 years or so.
ReplyDeleteYou noticed that Channel 4's report on the situation included a HabushHabushHabushHabushHabush lawyer, no?
Just more circumstantial evidence. At least as much as the "Bush-Cheney-Rove-Halliburton-Big Oil-Iraq" conspiracy.
ReplyDeleteI don't buy it.
ReplyDeleteConspiracy theories are a bunch of bull. Especially when you consider that most liberals, including the ones running this country, hate domestic car manufacturers and have always wanted to see them fail.
The amount of positive press time Toyota usually gets(before this fiasco) as being the "greenest" automobile manufacturer proves my point. The drive by media always conveniently forgets how many gas guzzling SUVs and Trucks Toyota makes and presses the Pious(oops, Prius) down our throats.
Toyota screwed up. They tried to cover it up by blaming floor mats and they got caught with their pants around their ankles. Time to man up and take your market share loss. Now they are finding out what GM has known all these years, it is tough and lonely at the top.
Maybe. Or Maybe my tin-foil hat is working.
ReplyDelete80 Billion US tax payers money was thrown to "save" GM and Chrysler. The NUMI plant in California (Toyota-GM joint venture) will shut it's doors in three weeks- lone UAW plant for Toyota......gobble.gobble.....heartburn anyone....is this mic on?!
ReplyDeleteToyota stumbles as the american crap-builders scratch their way back. Is there anything Obama can't do ?
ReplyDeletePay attention.
Toyota didn't try to "cover it up by blaming floor mats". There are two separate issues. Floor mat entrapment covered by SSC 90L, and Accelerator pedal enhancement covered by SSC A0A. Where is the media coverage of the six other manufacturers who also have issues with sticking pedals? Makes you wonder.
ReplyDeleteAnony 2/10/2010 @ 12:19pm -
ReplyDeleteOf course they are two seperate issues. But it's really, REALLY interesting how the floor mats caused unintended acceleration. And now it's the pedals??? Or is it the ECU next? Have yopu seen the fix for some of these pedals? Take a Dremel tool and shave off some of the pedal. Where is the exact science in this? Is every technician in the country going to be shaving off the exact amount?
And which other manufacturers are recalling vehicles because of sticking gas pedals? Do you have a link? I am aware of about 5 different recalls right now from a couple of different manufacturers(FoMoCo for a Milan/Fusion braking recall - Chrysler for a braking recall - Honda has a Fit recall for about 140,000 models - Honda has an airbag recall for '01/'02 models >300,000), but not one has to do with unintended acceleration. Not one. So, please, tell us. Don't write whatever it is you feel like saying without citation.
Furthermore, State Farm insurance, the largest insurance company in America, came forward just the other day to make it known that they reported an issue with unintended acceleration in 2007 in Toyotas. 2007!!!!!! And the feds ignored it as did Toyota.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100209/ap_on_bi_ge/us_toyota_recall_us
There, and I have a citation.
Toyota f&%cked up. They got too big too fast and f&%cked up. Tough. Now they're going to eat their shit sandwich and lose market share. The feds have nothing to do with this. There is no conspiracy theory.
Oops. Better link for the above comment and article here -

Oops. Hey Anony, here is ANOTHER recall about to come down the pipe for Toyota.
ReplyDeleteFor the longest time Toyota had an unhealthy obsession with being number one. Beating GM and Ford in worldwide sales and in our market. In order to get there, quality was overlooked. IOW -
TOO BIG TOO QUICK!

Disgruntled Car Salesman, Regardless of how much Toyota f*@cked up you cannot deny that the US media has been placing Toyota's recall at the forefront of the news consistenty for quite some time now. Is nothing else happening in the world that Toyota has to consistently make headlines for a recall? Other car manufacturers have had recalls and it's never made the news this big or have legal proceedings initiated because of it. I really smell propaganda by feds and big business to cause a loss in confidence in Toyota as a reliable brand to help US car sales.
ReplyDeleteRecalls that are initiated because of possible DEATHS often do get quite a bit of media coverage.
ReplyDeleteRemember the Ford "Exploder" tire recall of mid '90s? That got quite a bit of bad press for Ford and Bridgestone/Firestone groups from the media, didn't it?
Remember the Audi 5000 from teh late '80s? Seems to me that the bad press about the unintended acceleration in those vehicles killed Audi sales for a decade.
Where are the conspiracy theories there?
I said it on the 11th of this month, and, funny ehough, Akio Toyoda is scheduled to say it today to congress in his prepared speech, "too big, too quick."
Toyota's days of being the media darling for being a "green" manufacturer are OVER. Their obsession with beating GM led to their downfall when they started to sacrifice quality. The feds have nothing to do with this. Toyota screwed themselves many different ways, and will soon learn that "stonewalling" is a terrible PR move.
I think its a bunch of BULL.... Basically they want Toyota to be out from NA. Check to see how many complaints GM received on their cars but no one is taking a notice.
ReplyDeleteI am sure all dumb drivers are having these pedals sticking issue and of course the floor mat problem.
We own 5 - 2010 Toyota Sienna and a 2009 Rav 4, 2009 Camry, I called my dealership and they said if the VIN number Starts with J than your Rav 4 is fine but if not than you should bring it in for a check up..... NOW why J?? J means, the car is manufactured in Japan but if its not J than its manufactured in America... Possibility could be.... It was an inside job and somebody did that purposely...
Doesn't matter how many recalls and other issues TOYOTA has, we are always sticking with TOYOTA.
Its a conspiracy nothing else and at-least Mr. TOYODA is man enough to testify in front of American People. Way to go Mr. Toyoda :)

ReplyDeleteFor all of the purported wrong doing by the media regarding Toyota's alleged cover up gas pedals, floor mats, ECM's etc...
ReplyDeleteMy personal experience with the company and their products have been positive. I have, as well as many of you out there, friends and family that swear by their products. This fact by far, is what keeps many, Toyota "faithful".
If the "Big Three" had nutured this same reputation I have no doubt they would be enjoying the same positive status as does Toyota despite these problems.
-AITEBAR
ReplyDeleteDo you have proof of this? I didn't think so. You are DELUSIONAL if you think that this is some kind of "inside job." Saying something like that puts you out there with the wingnuts who claim 9/11 was an "inside job."
And, what about all the Priusesesessesses that are made in Japan? You know, the ones with the braking problem? Was that an "inside job" too?
You Camry is under recall. Your Sienna is not.
Having said that, for the most part IMO, Toyota DOES make a nice product. Reliable, dependable, some are stylish.... They hold their value well and can rack up the miles.
However, that doesn't excuse the fact that the Toyota company, including the higher echelon executives, are a bunch of arrogant pricks who had this coming. Including Mr. Toyoda, who initally wasn't going to show up at the congressional hearings on the hill. He wanted his American lackey to handle it, but decided that he would show up after all.
And so what if he showed up? Big fucking deal. Those that run the Big 3 have been in that hot seat before.
For the record, NONE of you have addressed the "conspiracy theory" behind the Ford "Exploder" tire debacle or the Audi 5000 recalls. Hmmmmmmm????
I didn't think so. When you think and speak with emotion, you sound no better than a babbling derelict drunk.
TIME WILL TELL IF IT'S A CONSPIRACY.
ReplyDeleteTruth will get revealed. Watch out government, Toyota.
GM just announced a 1.3 million vehicle recall. Your conspiracy theory has just been DEBUNKED!
ReplyDeleteOF COURSE THERE IS EVERY BIT OF CONSPIRACY THAT THE U.S GOVT IS INVOLVED. THERE IS CONFLICT OF INTEREST BECAUSE THEY OWN GOVT MOTORS. NONE OF THE SHIT IN THE CONGRESSIONAL HEARING IS VALID (SEE BUSINESS WEEK: THE TOYOTA WITCH HUNT) TOYOTA HAS NOTHING TO HIDE AND IS STILL THE TOP AUTOMAKER! I WILL ALWAYS BUY TOYOTA, BECAUSE THEY MAKE THE BEST PRODUCTS IN THE WORLD. ALSO CHECK OUT CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY ON RISK OF DRIVING A RECALLED TOYOTA) THE ODDS ARE YOU ARE 1900% TIMES MORE LIKELY TO DIE WALKING A MILE THAN DRIVING A MILE IN A RECALLED TOYOTA! TOYOTA RULES!
ReplyDeleteTrue,
ReplyDeleteThe sold out media can report all the "truth" they want about Toyota. But Toyota's real friend here is their magnificent products over the years. Friends, family and myself will attest to the quality and reliability that have come to define the company over the years.
Shame on the U.S. Government their whore, the unions.
I have owned over the last 15 years 4 toyota's and will not drive anything else. But, I have always made it a point to buy only the ones MADE IN JAPAN!!!!!! I am a true blue, caucasian american, and I say Toyota should have never got into bed with american manufacturing.
ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting note. Kinda ironic actually. Enjoy!

Disgruntled... you reference the Audi 5000 sudden acceleration problem twice - but you do remember that this WAS in fact staged by 60 Minutes and never proven to be anything more than driver error. You are correct, the negative media impacted Audi for about a decade and all because 60 Minutes staged some sudden acceleration using compressed air. Of course, the big winner when Audi sales dropped from 70K units to 12K units was probably Toyota.
ReplyDeleteIt is definetely a conspiracy.the fact that liberals hate Us carmakers is a mask for them to do the job.Yup the cars are sabotaged. No jobs, no money ,recession, foreign carmakers blowing up the economy.Almoust no mentioning of this conspiracy in the media. You do the counting.
ReplyDeleteYou american car lovers are losers! GM is technically bankrupt and are alive because the poor americans are forced to bailout their shit box by the stupid call from their own government! Quit bashing TOYOTA, cause reality is TOYOTA IS KING! PROOF IS IN THEIR MARKET CAPTIALIZATION! U.S $125 BILLION, NOTHING FROM ANY OTHER AUTOMAKER TOUCHES IT! WHY . . . CAUSE THERE ARE MANY MORE SATISFIED CUSTOMERS FROM TOYOTA THAN ANY OTHER AUTOMAKER! CONSUMERS VOTE WITH THEIR MONEY AND TOYOTA IS THE ONE THEY LOVE! PERIOD!
