Rocco is pretty good with this stuff. He predicts two weeks or so.
While no single front-runner has risen to the top, the interregnum's birthed a lake's worth of speculation, the most common and credible of which has narrowed the field to a Pack of Four: Bishops Gerald Kicanas of Tucson (currently vice-president of the US bishops), Blase Cupich of Rapid City, Jerome Listecki of LaCrosse and Milwaukee's administrator, Auxiliary Bishop William Callahan OFM Conv., a close confidant of Dolan's who attended last week's Al Smith Dinner in New York as the archbishop's guest.
Bp. Cupich didn't make any friends in the traditionalist group with his address to local priests.
Of course it's hard to image what he's talking about other than to suggest that the church probably has many more pressing issues than messing with the liturgy.
ReplyDeletere: Cupich: The more the people are pushing the bishops, the more they try to push back. His remarks were insensitive and stupid...
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised Perry isn't on that list...
ReplyDeleteTwo names I am surprised are not on the list, Perry, and Bishop Paul Swain. Swain is in South Dakota now but was a priest of the Madison diocese, he is a convert to the faith, a decorated vietnam vet, and once worked for Gov. Dreyfus. A guy like that must know the state real well and would be great to have here.
ReplyDeleteOf the four "front runners," Listecki would be, by far, the best for Catholics who want to see the next Archbishop build on Dolan's good work and take it up a notch even.
Actually, Dad, it isn't an issue of traditionalism, except for the tradition of bishops, priests, and staff jerking people around rather than dealing with issues. Archbishop Dolan was often pretty straightforward, certainly by comparison.
ReplyDeletePray that it isn't the first one. (I doubt it will be him. Dolan will make sure that his successor continues the rebuilding of Milwaukee.) Of the list, remarks aside, Cupich is the best.
ReplyDeleteFr. Erik, could you say why you think Cupich is the best? His recent remarks in Milwaukee seem to have burnt a lot of bridges with a lot of people.
ReplyDeleteIt's not Callahan and it's not Cupich....
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't say Bp Listecki is a traditionalist either. Yes, he is pro-life but is it troublesomely quiet on liturgy.
